Speech-Language Pathology
Speech-language pathology is a field that aims to improve the lives of those with communication disorders. Pathologists help those overcome problems related to pronunciation, language fluency and swallowing. Read on to learn more about preparing to become a speech-language pathologist.
Inside Speech-Language Pathology
A degree program in speech-language pathology prepares students to diagnose and treat speaking and hearing impediments, learning disabilities and communication disorders. People in the field apply their expertise in educational and medical settings, usually functioning as specialized teachers or therapists.
Even though several levels of instruction are available for the field, including certificates, associate's degrees and bachelor's degrees, a master's degree and a proper professional license (which entails passing a national test and meeting state-specific requirements) are needed in most states in order to practice as a pathologist. The other levels of education, however, can lead to jobs as assistants for licensed practitioners.
Speech-language pathologists have a mixed interest in education and healthcare, since communication and learning problems can stem from physical, physiological and neurological challenges, such as strokes, head injuries, deafness and dyslexia, among other issues.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the field of speech-language pathology will probably expand at a faster rate (up by 19%) than most careers between 2008-2018, due to the growth of special education and the aging of baby boomers. By May 2010, also reported by BLS, the median annual income for a pathologist was $66,920, with the middle half earning between $53,230 and $84,250 at workplaces ranging from schools to nursing homes and hospitals (www.bls.gov).
