Dental Hygienist Training Overview

Dental hygienists clean teeth and teach patients good dental care practices. To become a dental hygienist, one must have formal training. The Commission on Dental Accreditation, part of the American Dental Association (ADA), has accredited 266 programs throughout the States. Accredited programs in dental hygiene confer certificates or associate, bachelors or masters degrees. All States require dental hygienists to be licensed, which involves passing a clinical and written examination given by ADA's Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. The clinical part of the test is given by regional or State testing centers or agencies. Licensed hygienists can go on to earn a certificate in administrating and regulating of anesthesia.
