Dentists tend to be general practitioners who help their patients with a variety of dental needs, but if you are pursuing a career in dentistry, you can choose to specialize in one of nine specific areas. Orthodontics is the largest such specialty. Orthodontists focus on straightening teeth by applying pressure using braces and retainers. Oral surgeons perform operations on the mouth and jaw. Periodontists treat gums and bones while endodontists do root canal therapy. You can also become a pediatric dentist and work on children.
