Medical facility management is a specialized area of facilities management. Medical facility managers are responsible for ensuring that healthcare facilities, such as surgical facilities, clinics, public health organizations and hospitals are properly cleaned, maintained and supplied. Managers also oversee implementation of new technology and energy efficiency initiatives. Depending on the size of the medical facility, the facility manager may be in charge of renovations and expansion plans for buildings.
Because of the diversity of careers available in the medical facilities management field, some entry-level positions are available after completing a degree at the undergraduate degree level; however, many jobs in medical facility management require applicants to have master's degrees. While some medical facilities managers have degrees in engineering or architecture, many degree programs in health administration and healthcare systems management include courses medical facility management.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expected employment of administrative services managers, which include facility managers, to increase by 12% during the 2008-2018 decade. In 2008, the industry employed about 12% of all facility managers. According to the BLS, the average annual salary for administrative services managers was $84,390 in May 2010 (www.bls.gov).
