Pre-Dentistry Studies
Pre-dentistry studies are available for undergraduate students interested in becoming dentists. These programs offer science-based courses that prepare students for dental school.
Inside Pre-Dentistry Studies
Dental programs typically require students to either earn a bachelor's degree or complete a minimum of two years of bachelor's-level study prior to applying for dental school. Pre-dental undergraduate students can major in an area of interest and declare a pre-dental track after the first year of study. A pre-dental track requires students to take courses considered prerequisites for dental schools, such as chemistry, physics and biological sciences.
Pre-dental studies generally include extensive lab work, and some schools may require students to complete a practicum, working under the supervision of a dentist. Other courses may include inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry and mathematics. Liberal arts courses are also often required. Some programs require students to take the Dental Admission Test (DAT) as part of their pre-dentistry curricula.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment in the field of dentistry is expected to increase by 16% from 2008 to 2018 (www.bls.gov). The BLS further reported that in May 2010, dentists earned an average annual salary of $158,770.
