Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Sciences

Veterinary medicine and clinical sciences are fields that explore the ways different drugs, treatments and clinical procedures affect animals in need of care. Students in this field typically earn a graduate degree.

Inside Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Sciences

Students interested in veterinary medicine and clinical sciences can find a variety of programs available at the graduate level. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program is designed for students pursuing careers in veterinary science research or as veterinarians. DVM programs could include concentration areas in a clinical specialty, such as exotic animal care, shelter medicine or rural animal medicine. Specific veterinary courses can include veterinary anatomy and histology, embryology, poultry disease, morphology, pharmacology and clinical nutrition. Students may also be required to complete a residency in an animal shelter, hospital or clinic.

Additionally, some schools offer a Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Veterinary Clinical Science. Students who complete these programs study animal health and diseases and prepare to work in a number of areas, such as clinical research and clinical trials administration.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), veterinarians are required to be licensed by their state before practicing (www.bls.gov). The veterinary field is expected to see faster-than-average job growth from 2008 and 2018, increasing employment opportunities by 33%.
