Psychology
Adults who wish to study learning, thinking, attitudes, emotions, brain activity, gender, cultural issues, emotional development, and human behavior may focus their studies on the field of psychology. Like other social scientists, psychologists, formulate hypotheses and collect data to test their validity. Some psychologists own their own practices and others may be employed in applied settings such as business, industry, government or non-profit groups. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the highest 10 percent of psychologists earned more than $87,060 in 2002.
There are many different types of psychologists including developmental psychologists, clinical psychologists, and child psychologists. Depending on the desired specialty, a psychologist's salary may vary. These options of occupation in the field of psychology include counseling, industrial organized psychology, developmental psychology, or an experimental or research position. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that a doctoral degree is required for employment as an independent licensed clinical or counseling psychologist in almost all cases.
