Psychology: Health Psychology

One with a passion for psychology, health, and helping others might consider entering the field of health psychology. Health psychology is a concentration within clinical psychology that, as the name suggests, deals primarily with health-related issues. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), www.bls.gov, health psychologists promote good health through health maintenance counseling programs designed to help people achieve goals such as stopping smoking or losing weight.

The BLS advises that all those hoping to become licensed practicing clinical psychologists must earn doctoral degrees. A doctoral degree usually requires 5 to 7 years of graduate study plus, typically, a 1 year internship. One who earns a lower degree in an appropriate field, such as a bachelor's degree, may qualify to become a psychologist's assistant.
