According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nearly all arts administrators have completed at least four years of study at an accredited institution, with many earning graduate-level degrees (www.bls.gov). Some arts managers and directors also have experience as artists or designers.
Day-to-day work in this field may include raising and managing funds for community theatre projects, recruiting volunteers for special events or marketing an upcoming exhibition. For this reason, coursework includes topics in general business, economics and management, in addition core classes in areas like art advocacy, record promotions, entertainment law and talent management. Students may also explore the operational aspects of art galleries, music venues or theatre companies.
Career options for a person with an arts management degree are wide ranging, though many graduates pursue administrative or directorial positions with arts organizations. Some career opportunities are also be available in the multi-media design, advertising and publishing industries. The BLS projected a 12% increase in employment of art directors during the 10-year period from 2008-2018. According to Payscale.com, most art supervisors or managers with 1-4 years of experience earn between $24,658 and $59,425 per year.
