Printmaking

Printmaking is a division of fine arts that focuses on the study of printing processes, both traditional and digital. Read on to find out more about the art of printmaking.

Inside Printmaking

Printmakers use inks and various traditional and digital printing processes to create art and transfer original images onto a variety of media. Colleges and universities offer printmaking programs at the bachelor's and master's levels. Most students interested in an education in printmaking pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking or a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in printmaking.

A degree program in printmaking includes fundamental art courses in design theory and methods, studio drawing, color theory and art history. Common core coursework in a printmaking program also includes lithography, monotype, woodblock, intaglio and serigraphy, each of which is also a specialization within the field.

Graduates of printmaking programs might pursue careers as independent fine artists or work in the publishing and printmaking industries, designing and creating prints for books, wallpapers, fabrics, papers and other consumer goods. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in May 2010 that the middle half of fine artists (which includes printmakers) earned $29,440-$65,420 a year (www.bls.gov).
