Individuals who dream of becoming a professional pianist or musician can earn a degree in piano and organ. These degree programs are typically available through bachelor's or master's degree programs in music or performance with a concentration in piano, organ or both. Some schools require students to audition before gaining admission to the program.
Students majoring in piano and organ play keyboard instruments, striving for technical and artistic perfection. They explore topics, such as piano pedagogy, music history, ensemble performance, piano literature, organ literature, music theory and complete internships. Many programs also require that enrollees take voice and diction classes. Aspiring piano and organ teachers take education classes and complete a student teaching experience. Recitals provide the opportunity for them to demonstrate their musical talents.
Graduates can work as music teachers at elementary, junior high or high schools, or give private lessons. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that between 2008 and 2018 the demand for these self-enrichment teachers will increase by 32% (www.bls.gov). For musicians and singers, the demand was predicted to increase by eight percent, mainly in religious organizations, although gigs in nightclubs may also be available. As of May 2010, the median annual salary for self-enrichment teachers was $36,340 and for college-level music teachers it was $62,040. The BLS adds that musicians and singers made a median hourly wage of $22.39.
