Inside Cinematography and Film Production
Many jobs in the motion picture industry fall into the category of film production. Other categories are pre-production and post-production. Jobs may be in production, camera, sound, electrical and grip, art, make-up and wardrobe.
Individuals interested in working on the production side of a motion picture may start preparing in high school. It is possible to break into the industry without formal training. However, formal training is available. Universities and colleges offer bachelor's degrees such as video and film production, film, television and digital media, theater program and audio production. Graduate programs may include master's in screenwriting and directing, design for stage and film and producing.
Students learn to use visual effects, audio and music to tie the production together and make it flow from start to finish. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), successful individuals in the film industry are creative, organized and business savvy, as well as having the abilities to put things together to fulfill their vision (www.bls.gov).
The BLS predicted employment for film editors, producers, actors, directors and camera operators to increase by 11% between 2008 and 2018. Producers and directors made a median annual salary of $68,440; film editors made $50,930; and camera operators made $40,390 as of May 2010. Professionals may work for a television network or a movie production company, and most opportunities are available in New York and other large cities.
