General Information about Associate Degree Programs

With a high school diploma or an equivalent, such as a general education diploma (GED), an individual can take their education to a higher level at a community college, junior college, or a tech school. Students can work for an associate's degree within a particular field of study or through general education. Associate's degrees are usually awarded after two years within a specific program. Students can gain one of two different types of degrees: either an Associate of Arts (AA) or an Associate of Sciences (AS). Associate degrees prepare students for employment in nursing, interior design and data processing. Students can also work towards computer certification and other licenses through associate's degree programs. Some programs will allow individuals without degrees to gain credit for the work and experience they've already obtained.
