Distance Learning Degrees in Naturopathic Medicine
As of 2010, only five accredited schools in the U.S. offered specific naturopathic medicine training, and none of these naturopathic medicine schools offered degrees or certificates via distance learning. The only accredited distance learning program in the nation to provide naturopathic medicine-related degree and certificate programs is the American College of Healthcare Sciences in Portland, Oregon.
American College of Healthcare Sciences
This distance learning institution was founded in the late 1970s and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council. Depending on the class, distance learning students are sent lab necessities, such as botanical roots and oil blends, as well as books and study guides. They also have access to the school's online library and participate in virtual class discussions and lectures.
Certificate in Dynamic Phytotherapy Consulting
In order to enroll in this 5-class certificate program, interested individuals must have a botanical science background. Once admitted, participants take classes in anatomy and physiology, holistic health consulting, herbalism, and naturopathic medicine selection for humans and animals.
Associate of Applied Science in Complementary Alternative Medicine
Within this associate degree program, students are required to take 15 general education credits of anatomy, physiology and English composition. They then take core naturopathic medicine classes in herbal studies, medical terminology, holistic nutrition and pathophysiology. Concentrations are available in herbal medicine or aromatherapy.
Graduate Certificate in Aromatherapy
This medicinal aromatherapy course requires the completion of four classes and is open to individuals who possess a bachelor's degree. Students learn to combine and extract the healing components of essential oils and herbs; they also study the possible side effects of such therapies on the body. Holistic medical practitioners, nurses or related health care professionals may benefit from learning this alternative medical practice.
Graduate Certificate in Herbal Medicine
Applicants to this 4-year distance learning program must have a 4-year degree and obtain permission from the school's dean. Students in this 4-part course learn to identify medicinal plants and study how these plants can positively assist with bodily issues and health concerns. Participants also study how to handle and apply these naturopathic medicines in a safe manner.
Master of Science in Complementary Alternative Medicine
Graduate students in this non-clinical program take online science courses, including anatomy, physiology, general chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry. They also take core naturopathic medicine courses, such as plant identification, safe handling and application, aromatherapy, holistic nutrition and homeopathy.
