The University of Missouri - Columbia is the largest school in Missouri to offer doctoral programs. Missouri State University, in Springfield, and Saint Louis University are the second and third largest schools in Missouri that offer doctoral degree programs.

Missouri's Largest Colleges and Universities with Doctoral Programs

University of Missouri - Columbia

Established in 1839, the University of Missouri (Mizzou or MU) in Columbia is the state's largest public school and a land-grant institution. Mizzou is among only six public schools in the nation to offer programs in agriculture, engineering, law, medicine and veterinary medicine all within one campus. Mizzou is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri system, which offers three additional locations in the state. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked MU 102nd among the best national universities. Mizzou offers over 286 degree programs through 17 schools and colleges, including a long list of doctoral programs.

Graduate School

Although more than 90 graduate programs are offered at many colleges and schools throughout MU, the Graduate School retains overall administrative responsibility for master's and doctoral program. Doctoral degrees offered by the MU Graduate School include a Doctor of Philosophy in Genetics, a Doctor of Philosophy in Nuclear Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience.

Harry S. Truman School of Public Affairs

The Truman School of Public Affairs is a division of the Graduate School at Mizzou. In addition to a master's degree in public affairs, this school offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Affairs.

School of Law

The University of Missouri School of Law offers several graduate and professional degrees. In addition to a Juris Doctor (J.D.) program, students can also pursue dual degrees that combine a J.D. with graduate coursework in business, economics, journalism and public affairs.

College of Human Environmental Sciences

Mizzou's College of Human Environmental Sciences (HES) consists of seven academic units, including human development and family studies, nutrition and exercise physiology and the School of Social Work. Serving roughly 350 graduate students, HES offers a Ph.D. in Architectural Studies, a Ph.D. in Personal Finance Planning and a Ph.D. in Human Environmental Sciences, which offers a concentration in textile and apparel management.

School of Social Work

The School of Social Work is a division of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. In addition to a bachelor's and master's degree in social work, this school offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work.

School of Medicine

The School of Medicine at MU consists of 21 departments that offer a wide variety of graduate and professional programs. Students interested in a career in medicine can pursue a Doctor of Medicine program in one of many specialty areas.

Sinclair School of Nursing

In 2009, U.S. News and World Report ranked the graduate nursing programs at MU 47th among the best programs in the country. In addition to a variety of undergraduate and master's degree programs, the Sinclair School offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing.

College of Veterinary Medicine

Mizzou's College of Veterinary Medicine consists of three departments in veterinary medicine and surgery, veterinary pathobiology and biomedical sciences. Doctoral degrees offered through this college include a professional Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy in Veterinary Pathobiology.

Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business

The Trulaske College is the second largest academic division at MU, serving more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Doctoral programs at Trulaske include a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration, which offers concentrations in management, marketing and finance.

School of Accountancy

The School of Accountancy at Mizzou is a division of the Trulaske College of Business. Doctoral degrees offered through this school include a Ph.D. in Accountancy.

College of Education

The College of Education offers a range of doctoral degrees through five academic units, including the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies. In 2009, U.S. News and World Report ranked the graduate education programs at MU 41st among the best in the country. Doctoral programs include a Doctor of Education in Reading and Literacy Education, a Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Learning Disabilities.

School of Information Science and Learning Technologies

A division of the College of Education, this school offers master's degrees in educational technology and library science. At the doctoral level, this school offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Information Science and Learning Technology.

School of Journalism

Founded in 1908, the School of Journalism at Mizzou is the oldest school of its kind in the world and offered the nation's first Ph.D. in Journalism (1934). In addition to the doctoral program, this school also offers undergraduate and master's degree programs in journalism and mass communications.

College of Arts and Science

The College of Arts and Science consists of 27 different academic departments, including the School of Music. In addition to bachelor's and master's degree programs, this college offers a wide range of doctoral programs. Doctoral degrees offered include a Ph.D in Anthropology, a Ph.D. in Political Science and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication.

School of Music

Part of the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Music offers four master's degrees and one doctoral degree program. Interested graduate students can pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education.

College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources

Mizzou's College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) offers undergraduate and graduate programs through a range of academic departments and programs, as well as the School of Natural Resources. Doctoral programs are offered in many areas, including agricultural education, animal sciences, biological engineering, food science and biochemistry.

School of Natural Resources

A division of CAFNR, the School of Natural Resources at MU consists of four departments. Doctoral programs offered by this school include a Ph.D. in Fisheries and Wildlife, which was ranked among MU's top ten graduate programs for productivity. Graduate students can also pursue a Ph.D. in Forestry and a Ph.D. in Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences.
