Largest Doctoral Degree-Granting School in New Jersey

Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey

Founded in 1766 and located in New Brunswick, Rutgers University is the eighth oldest institution of higher education in the U.S. The largest university in New Jersey, Rutgers University - New Brunswick is acknowledged as part of the New Jersey state university system by the New Jersey Legislature. Currently, the school offers 80 doctoral degree programs through 13 of its 14 schools and colleges. In addition to its New Brunswick location, Rutgers University has satellite campuses in Camden and Newark.

School of Environmental and Biological Sciences

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences offers graduate degree programs in 13 subspecialty areas of biology and environmental sciences. Areas of study include atmospheric science, food science, ecology and evolution, entomology and microbial biology. Doctoral degree programs are available in microbial biology, nutritional sciences, food science, entomology and other areas.

Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy

The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy offers doctoral degree programs in medicinal chemistry, toxicology and pharmaceutical sciences. The doctoral program in toxicology is a joint venture with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Doctoral students at the pharmacy school have access to a wide range of equipment needed to conduct research and participate in experiments with modern spectroscopy, spectrometry and chromatography devices.

School of Nursing

Two doctoral degree programs are available at the School of Nursing. Programs lead to a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.). The DNP program emphasizes clinical practice, while the Ph.D. program requires students to conduct rigorous research in a nursing specialty. The DNP program is geared towards students who want to become clinical practitioners.

School of Engineering

The School of Engineering offers doctoral degree programs in seven engineering specialties, including mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil and environmental engineering, chemical and biochemical engineering, biomedical engineering and industrial engineering. Concentration areas are available to students enrolled in each of the school's engineering doctoral degree programs. For example, students enrolled in the mechanical and aerospace engineering doctoral degree program can choose to study design and control, thermal sciences, fluid mechanics or solid mechanics specialties.

Mason School of the Arts

The Mason School of the Arts is made of dance, music, theatre arts and visual arts divisions. Of these four divisions, only the music department offers a doctoral degree. The four doctoral degrees include a Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Musical Arts, Doctor of Musical Arts in Collaborative Piano and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education. Students enrolled in the Ph.D. program can choose from two specializations: composition and musicology. Research that culminates in a doctoral dissertation is required to complete the Ph.D. program.

Rutgers Business School

Doctoral degree programs are offered in 11 areas of business study. Areas of study include accounting, finance, economics, organizational management and supply chain management. The Rutgers Business School also admits students with individualized Ph.D. study objectives - this is acceptable if students can find a business professor who has expertise in a specific area of interest. Additionally, the business Ph.D. can be completed in conjunction with another doctoral degree program conferred by a different school or college.

School of Communication and Information

The School of Communication and Information consists of divisions in journalism and media studies, communication, professional development studies and library and information science. The Ph.D. program is interdisciplinary in nature and allows students to study a range of communication and information topics. Areas of focus are required, however, and students can choose to specialize in communication, media studies or library and information science.

School of Management and Labor Relations

Only one doctoral degree program is offered by the School of Management and Labor Relations. The Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Relations and Human Performance prepares students to become leading scholars in the areas of employment, industrial relations and human resources. The program is interdisciplinary and requires completion of a doctoral dissertation. Students enrolled in the doctoral program can also take courses at other universities through Rutgers participation in the Inter-University Consortium program. Some of the other participating universities include Cornell University, the University of Minnesota and Michigan State University.

School of Social Work

The School of Social Work has a doctoral degree program in social work that prepares students for careers in higher education, social policy and research and administration. Academic Analytics, an organization that provides detailed analytical data, ranked the social work faculty ninth with respect to national productivity. In addition to completing research and submitting a dissertation, doctoral degree students in social work are required to take courses in areas like social policy analysis, theory development and research methods.

Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy

Students enrolled at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy prepare for careers in the public and private sectors by learning about human services, public health, social policy and other issues. The school offers a doctoral degree program in planning and public policy. Students who have graduated from this program have entered into teaching and research roles at major universities or secured employment in public, non-profit or private planning roles. Only students with a master's degree are eligible to enroll in the doctoral degree program.

The Graduate School

The Graduate School of Rutgers University does not confer any doctoral degrees. The school serves to function as an advocate to graduate students enrolled in university-wide programs. The three goals of the Graduate School at Rutgers are to uphold standards for graduate education, maintain a diverse graduate student body and increase the quality of life for graduate students at the school.

Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology

The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers offers two Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) programs. These psychology doctoral programs are clinical in nature and prepare students to become practicing psychologists in specific areas of psychology. Currently the school offers the Psy.D. program for clinical and school psychology. Unlike a Doctor of Philosophy program that focuses on research, the Psy.D. programs require students to complete many hours of clinical, hands-on experiences.

Graduate School of Education

The doctoral degree program offered by the Graduate School of Education requires students to choose from two concentrations: learning, cognition, instruction and development or theory, organization and policy. Students enrolled in the former specialization can then focus their studies in one of ten subfields, including social studies education, educational psychology, learning sciences, early childhood education and learning sciences. Regardless of concentration, the goal is to graduate students who can practice in the U.S. and have a lasting impact on educational policy and administration.
