Drafting Course and Class Descriptions
Drafting courses are typically part of 2-year programs in technical drawing or computer-aided drafting and design, but undergraduate and graduate degree programs in architecture will also include instruction in drafting. Keep reading to get some essential information about drafting classes, and read a list of courses typically offered in this subject.
Drafting courses and classes are typically part of certificate or 2-year degree programs in drafting technology or computer-aided drafting and design (also called CAD or CADD). Drafting courses are also included in 4-year architectural degree programs. Students will get experience reading and creating blueprints and schematics, and they will use industry standard CAD software to design tools, buildings, electrical systems and more.
List of Drafting Classes
The course list below can shed more light on the topics covered in drafting courses.
Introduction to Technical Drafting Course
In a basic technical drafting class, students learn about topics like geometrics, sectional views and multi-view drawing. Students also study lettering, tolerance and dimensioning. Depending on the program, students may gain experience with computer drafting systems; however, most introductory drafting courses begin with paper and cardboard models.
AutoCAD, a computer-based drafting tool, is used by drafters. Students learn basic AutoCAD commands and how to create and revise architectural, electrical and mechanical drawings. Computer drafting courses also cover manipulate extrusions, wireframes, solid models, 3-D modeling theories and ways to render 3-D drawings. Introductory drafting class should be completed prior to enrolling in this course.
Students in this drafting class develop competency in designing and rendering plans for residential, commercial or public spaces. Topics covered in architectural drafting include plot planning, floor and foundation planning, wall construction, window selection, stairway planning and roof construction. Students learn AutoCAD techniques specific to architectural drafting.
Students learn how to draft plans that incorporate electrical symbols. The plans show electricians where to install lighting and electrical systems. Electrical drafters also draw diagrams of equipment and electrical controls. Students should have an understanding of basic drafting before enrolling in this class.
In an industrial drafting course, students learn how to draft assembly drawings. They also learn how to draw different viewpoints, like section and auxiliary views, and how to interpret drawings. This class may begin a degree program in industrial drafting or be an elective in a general drafting program.
Tool Design Course
Tool designers draft designs for tools and the machines that will create the tools. Drafting students use hand-drawing and drafting software to design tools. Focus is on designing fixtures, jigs, dies and molds. This course is an advanced drafting course for students who have completed introductory drafting and AutoCAD courses.
