All three of the schools featured below are situated within 12 minutes of downtown Houston and offer programs that include instruction or specializations in drawing. Texas Southern University
Approximately four instructors teach art classes in this school's Department of Visual and Performing Arts. Art hopefuls choose from seven areas of specialization, including drawing.
Bachelor of Arts in Art - Drawing Specialization
Required classes in this school's 123-credit program include drawing and composition, computer-generated art and design, painting, art history and printmaking. In addition, students complete at least 30 credit hours in their chosen area of specialization, where they can take classes like advanced drawing, digital imaging and advanced life sketching. To earn this degree, a senior exhibition is required, along with an exit examination.
University of Houston
This university's School of Art faculty is comprised of about eight members. The school encourages interdisciplinary study, and students can take drawing classes through the art and graphic communications programs.
Bachelor of Arts in Art - Drawing Discipline
In addition to courses in studio art, students in this program complete classes in art criticism and art history, along with having the option of choosing a minor area of study. A fundamental drawing class is required; students then complete 24 hours in their chosen studio discipline. Advanced classes include intermediate, life and perspective drawing, rendering and sketching, graphic communications, illustration and advanced drawing.
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Communications
Students in this program complete classes in design theory, history, practice and methods. After completing at least 27 hours of fundamental and mid-level classes, graphic communications majors take part in a portfolio review for admittance to the next semester. Required classes in this program include drawing, graphic communications, color and design principles. Graphic design software, book art and perspective drawing are also recommended.
Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art - Graphic Communications Concentration
A basic understanding of certain undergraduate design topics is needed for this 60-hour program. Students with unrelated bachelor's degrees must complete fundamental classes. Master's candidates identify an area of interest, and a portfolio presentation with documentation of written thesis research is due at the end of each semester. They also complete seminars and courses; graduate-level offerings in drawing include a class in drawing for design and drawing and life drawing studios. A final thesis exhibit, including an oral examination, takes place at the Blaffer Gallery.
