Aspiring editors in New York can hone their craft by enrolling in one of the many editing courses offered by schools throughout the state. Classes are offered for individuals looking to edit books, magazines, materials for broadcast, prose and/or written business communications. Although some schools offer standalone courses or programs, many of these classes are integrated within degree programs at the undergraduate or graduate level. City College of New York
The City College of New York, located in New York City, offers a certificate program in publishing through its English Department. Students take courses in proofreading and copyediting fundamentals, the publishing industry and the editorial process. Students practice editing texts, such as cookbooks, nonfiction works and fiction pieces. The certificate program includes two internships. The college also operates a writing center that runs free workshops designed to help students edit their written materials. Workshops include courses in grammar and proofreading for punctuation. The center also offers handouts, covering topics such as commas and punctuation patterns, which may help students in editing their work.
Hofstra University in Hempstead offers a number of publishing and writing courses through its continuing education division. These writing and publishing fundamentals courses cover areas like copyediting, proofreading and polishing prose. Students can also take a self-paced, online medical transcription and editing course that covers editing speech recognition and medical transcriptions.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English program has a concentration in publishing studies and literature that includes courses in book editing. The publishing studies minor also incorporates two courses in book editing. CUNY Lehman College
Located in the Bronx, Lehman College has a Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Journalism program that includes a course in multimedia proofreading and editing. This course teaches students to edit copy for every media platform, in accordance with the Associated Press Stylebook. The school also has a minor in English with a course in proofreading and editing
The Department of Humanities at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry offers a bachelor's degree program in journalism that includes classes in editing. The graphics and copyediting courses teach students the skills needed to work as copyeditors. The media department also offers a course in magazine production and editing that provides students the opportunity to proofread and edit a magazine. The practicum in newspaper publishing, also offered by the media department, requires students to edit various sections of a magazine, among other tasks.
New York University
Students can earn a Certificate in Editing from New York University in New York City. Students study techniques to edit magazine articles and books. They also take courses in proofreading books, copyediting, magazine copyediting, editing book manuscripts, fact checking, research and grammar. Program graduates should have skills in copyediting, proofreading, indexing and researching that are needed to work as editors.
Onondaga Community College
Onondaga Community College in Syracuse offers a minor in journalism that includes editing courses. Its newspaper editing laboratory course gives students the chance to apply learned editing theories. The course is open to the student newspaper's senior members.
Pace University is located in New York City. Its Master of Science (MS) in Publishing provides students with an overview of the publishing industry. The core curriculum includes a course in acquisitions of general interest books and a class in editorial practices and principles. Students can also take electives in professional editing, rewriting, copyediting and magazine editing. Students also can pursue a combined BA in English/MS in Publishing.
SUNY College at Cortland
Aspiring editors in the Cortland area can earn a BA in Professional Writing at SUNY Cortland. Students can concentrate in digital and technical writing; creative writing/editing and publishing; or rhetorical theory and practice. Students take courses in writing in the new media, business writing, technical writing, revision, editing and creative writing. The program also includes a course in writing for online publications. The professional writing senior seminar requires students to submit a piece that demonstrates their editing and writing skills.
Students can take editing courses at Syracuse University in Syracuse, through its Bachelor of Science in Magazine or its Bachelor of Science in Newspaper and Online Journalism. At the graduate level, they can earn a Master of Arts (MA) in Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism. Students may take courses in magazine editing or newspaper editing.
The university also offers a BA in Writing and Rhetoric. Students take courses covering various types of writing, as well as an advanced editing studio course. The writing minor also incorporates editing courses.
