Certificate in Education Supervision

Certificate programs in education supervision, also known as educational leadership or school administration, are typically available at the graduate level; this includes both post-baccalaureate and the post-master's programs. They can commonly be completed as part of a lengthier master's degree program, or they can be offered as standalone options. In select states, a certificate program can prepare an individual to become certified as a supervisor with the Department of Education, and in other cases the program may simply help an education professional prepare to advance into an administrative position. While certification may not be available or required in all states, an education supervisor working in a public school, such as a K-12 principal, must be licensed by the state. Certificate programs in special education supervision are also available.

Education Prerequisites

In order to enroll in an education supervision graduate certificate program, an applicant must possess at least a bachelor's degree. In cases where the certificate curriculum can be combined with a master's degree program, admission to the master's degree program would also be necessary. Post-master's education supervisor programs require a student to have already completed a master's degree. Some programs may require that applicants already hold teaching certification and several years of teaching experience. Some programs are designed for both post-baccalaureate and post-master's students, while other programs are designed solely for post-master's students.

Course Topics

Education supervision students focus on topics that help them understand how to work in various academic administrative positions. These concepts help future supervisors prepare for classroom management and focus on tactics for students of various ages. Coursework can cover the following:

  • Curriculum development
  • Staff supervision
  • Education law
  • Leadership
  • Educational organization

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

Principals work in supervisory positions at the K-12 levels, commonly after gaining several years of teaching experience and earning master's degrees. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that, from 2010-2020, principals at the elementary, middle, and high school levels would see a ten percent increase in employment, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations nationally. In May 2010, the median annual salary for these principals was about $87,000, according to the BLS.

Continuing Education, Licensing, and Certification

After completing a standalone graduate certificate program in education supervision or a related field, an individual may choose to continue on to complete a master's degree program in a subject like educational leadership or school administration. Individuals who complete a master's degree program alongside a certificate program, or those who complete a post-master's certificate program, may consider doctoral program options in the field.

At least a master's degree is commonly required to become licensed as a principal, and it may also be required for certain state certifications. In some cases, 'supervisor' may exist as a certification title that is offered by the state. A student may be qualified for such certification by a graduate certificate program in education supervision, or such a certification may call for at least a master's degree and a minimum amount of teaching experience. Continuing education is typically mandatory to maintain licensure.
