Electroencephalography (EEG) technology courses prepare students to use and adjust equipment for EEG tests, as well as recognize the test results. Such courses are usually taken as part of a degree program or postsecondary non-degree award program.

Essential Information

EEG technology classes are usually part of a 2-year associate's degree program in electroneurodiagnostic technology at a technical school or community college. However, they may also be part of a one-year professional diploma or certificate program, preparing students more quickly for a career as registered EEG technician. These shorter programs may be offered at a medical facility. Some institutions award a diploma halfway through the completion of a degree program so that students can begin working in the field. Typical of all programs is extensive hands-on practice through clinical internships and labs.

Individuals enrolled in an EEG technology program complete basic coursework in human anatomy and physiology before actually taking EEG coursework. Some programs also require a medical terminology course that focuses on the common vocabulary used to communicate about EEG exams. The most basic EEG coursework introduces students to medical ethics, patient care and common uses for EEG testing. Students later learn to place electrodes, use EEG monitors and adjust the equipment when performing tests. Their advanced coursework prepares them to interpret readings and familiarizes them with injuries and illnesses that can affect these readings.

Human Anatomy and Physiology

This is a class that must be completed prior to enrolling in EEG technicians courses with EEG coursework. Students receive a broad overview of major body structures, including the respiratory, excretory, nervous, muscular, endocrine and skeletal systems. They also study major organs and tissues, especially those essential to performing EEG tests. Students usually attend lectures and classroom demonstrations and participate in related lab work.

Basic Medical Terminology

Another required class, this course introduces EEG students to relevant vocabulary, including prefixes and suffixes that are crucial to understanding commonly used terms. EEG technicians need to be familiar with this specialized terminology in order to communicate effectively with doctors regarding EEG exams and to understand patients' medical records.

Fundamentals of Electroencephalography

Lectures and labs explore the principles of neurophysiology, the theory and practice of electroencephalography and the theory and use of EEG technology. Lessons incorporate studies of medical ethics and professional standards, including patient care, first aid and emergency care. Students are introduced to common conditions normally diagnosed through EEG testing.

Electroneurodiagnostic Instruments and Electronics

EEG technician courses introduce students to the use of various types of EEG monitors and instruments, including the placement of electrodes. This class includes strategies for making the necessary instrument and testing protocol adjustments for working with infant, adult and geriatric patients. Coursework typically includes lectures, classroom demonstrations and clinical work.

Advanced EEG Technology and Applied Skills

This class familiarizes students with the effects of illness and injury on EEG readings. EEG technicians learn to recognize the influences of medications, including anesthesia, on EEG readings. Students learn to recognize the differences between readings from patients with acquired and congenital conditions.
