Electricity Courses and Classes Overview
Electricity courses are often found at community and technical colleges as part of the requirements for associate degree programs in electrical, electronics or instrumentation technology. They may also be included as part of a vocational program for aspiring electricians. Physics departments at 4-year colleges also host advanced courses in electricity. An overview of classes follows.
Basic AC and DC Electricity Course
This introductory electricity course covers the two types of electrical current: alternating (AC) and direct (DC). Basic concepts include AC and DC electricity theory, inductance, magnetism, impedance, resonance, capacitance and reactance. Also explored are topics such as Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws, voltage and current, batteries, power and electromagnetic induction. Students learn the formulas used in electrical math and gain hands-on experience troubleshooting AC and DC series-parallel circuits. This course is typically included as part of an associate degree in electrical technology.
This course teaches students studying to become electricians how to read electrical blueprints to wire a building safely. Elements of electrical wiring include lighting, conductors, branch circuits and conduits. Students become familiar with the requirements of the National Electrical Code, and will be able to properly install wiring, conduits and electrical distribution equipment by the end of the course.
National Electrical Code (NEC)
The National Electrical Code sets safety standard for electrical wiring and electrical equipment, and it is enforced by state and local law. Areas covered in this overview course include the history of the NEC, wiring standards and methods, over-current protection, materials and other topics relating to electrical wiring standards. This course is included as part of a vocational electrician program.
AC and DC Circuit Analysis
This course, offered in vocational programs on electricity and electronics, focuses on measurements, circuit analysis and the operation of test equipment with respect to both DC and AC electricity. Curriculum includes basic principles of AC and DC electricity, circuit analysis laws and theorems and circuit simulation software. By the end of the course, students should be able to interpret circuit schematics, understand and construct both DC and AC circuits, and be proficient in the use of testing equipment.
Electricity and Magnetism
Usually taught as an introductory physics course, this class spans several topics, starting with the basic concepts of electromagnetism. Students learn how electrocardiograms, metal detectors, musical instruments, pacemakers and other pieces of electrical equipment work. The curriculum explains the workings of electromagnetism in sun and moon haloes, the aurora borealis and radio telescopes. Color perception, Doppler effect and the Big Bang theory are also addressed.
