Tucson Elementary Teaching Schools

For those wishing to pursue a career in teaching at the elementary level, there are three school options in the greater Tucson, Arizona area. Both undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available.   • The University of Arizona (UA) offers a bachelor's degree in education with a concentration in elementary education; the same degree is also available with an additional emphasis in bilingual education. The campus is about three miles from downtown Tucson.
  • Located around four miles from the central part of the city, Northern Arizona University - Tucson has a bachelor's degree in elementary education and also offers two master's-level programs in education.
  • Pima Community College, situated roughly 11 miles from downtown Tucson, offers an associate's degree in the field that is designed for students who intend to transfer into a bachelor's degree program at a four-year school.

University of Arizona

The College of Education at the University of Arizona (UA) was founded in 1922, making it the first school of education in the state. The School of Education is staffed by 58 full time faculty and 30 clinical and adjunct faculty members.

Bachelor of Arts in Education

Candidates for the B.A. in Education with an elementary education emphasis are required to take general education courses covering language arts, mathematics, sciences, social studies and the arts, as well as courses in teaching fundamentals, teaching methods and student teaching. Areas covered include teaching methods, classroom processes, child development and structured English immersion. Student teaching takes place during the final semester of senior year, putting theory into practice when the teacher, under supervision, assumes complete responsibility for an elementary school class. The degree leads to the state's elementary education certification.

Bachelor of Arts in Education with Bilingual Option

The option of a bilingual emphasis in B.A. in Education program is designed for students who are already bilingual in Spanish and English. In addition to the requirements for a B.A. in Education, described above, students also complete 18 units dealing with bilingual education, including bilingual foundations and philosophy, methodology, linguistics and culture.

Northern Arizona University - Tucson

Northern Arizona University - Tucson is a part of the Northern Arizona University system, which is comprised of 36 campuses. The school is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and NAU graduates have a 98% pass rate on Arizona's education assessment exam.

Bachelor of Science in Education

The Bachelor of Science in Education with a specialization in elementary education is designed for students seeking teacher certification in addition to a bachelor's degree. Students are required to complete general education, education, elective and diversity courses, which may or may not fulfill other requirements.

Master of Education with Certification Emphasis

The Master of Education with Certification Emphasis program is comprised of 46 hours of education courses and a capstone program of 12 hours (two semesters) of student teaching. Students in the program complete advanced courses in curriculum and instruction and have the option of completing the reading specialist endorsement as well.

Master of Education with Continuing Professional Emphasis

The Master of Education with Continuing Professional Emphasis program provides students with mentoring and collaborative opportunities. The program explores such topics as curriculum design, teaching methods and classroom strategies. Students are required to complete 36 hours of coursework in order to obtain a degree. Those wishing to pursue teaching certification must do so separately, as this degree plan does not culminate in certification.

Pima Community College

Pima Community College is comprised of six campuses in the Tucson area, as well as several satellite centers. Classes for the associate degree can be taken at multiple locations.

Associate of Arts in Elementary Education

The Associate of Arts in Elementary Education is designed for students planning to transfer to another school to obtain a four-year degree. Completion of between 62 and 69 hours of coursework is required by the degree plan. Students in this track take general education courses in English, math, history, and science in addition to education related classes.
