  • Darton State College, in Albany, offers an emergency medical services (EMS) paramedic certificate and an associate degree in emergency medical services. Both programs prepare students for the EMT-paramedic certification exam.
  • Augusta Technical College is located in Augusta and offers technical certificate programs at the EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate levels, in addition to a paramedic technology diploma program.

Darton State College

Darton State College is a 2-year school located in Albany in southwest Georgia. The allied health division offers two options for students who are already certified as a basic EMT and are looking to earn paramedic certification.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Paramedic Certificate

Current EMT-Intermediate certification is a prerequisite for most students in this program; however, a fast-track option allows students with no previous EMS experience to work toward this certification while taking additional courses. This 3-semester program includes instruction on anatomy and physiology, the paramedic profession, psychiatric emergencies and trauma, in addition to neonatal, pediatric, respiratory, cardiovascular and medical emergencies. Graduates are eligible to take the paramedic certification exam offered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Once students have passed the test, they are licensed to practice in the state of Georgia and perform techniques for advanced life support.

Associate of Science in Emergency Medical Services

The paramedic portion of the curriculum in the associate degree program is identical to that of the certificate program mentioned above. Students receive classroom and clinical experience over three semesters as they work to prepare for national certification exams. In addition to this, several core-education courses are required in order to earn an associate degree. Upon completion of the program, students are allowed to take the EMT-Paramedic certification exam in order to practice in Georgia.

Augusta Technical College

Associate degree, certificate and continuing education programs are offered at Augusta Technical College, a 2-year school with campuses across northeast Georgia. All three levels of EMT certification are available, and all programs involve clinical and lab experiences.

Technical Certificate of Credit for Emergency Medical Technology-Basic

This 2-quarter certificate program offers entry-level training needed to work in the medical field as an EMT. Coursework covers the standards of emergency care, including clinical and practical applications for basic EMTs, patient assessment, air management and trauma emergencies. Successful completion of the program permits students to take the NREMT-Basic certification examination. In addition to the Augusta campus, the program is offered at the Waynesboro and Thomson campuses.

Technical Certificate of Credit for Emergency Medical Technology - Intermediate

Documentation of EMT-Basic certification is a prerequisite to this program. Students build upon the knowledge and skills obtained at the basic level and learn about intermediate-level shock, trauma and pharmacology. The 2-quarter program covers four classes designed to prepare students for the NREMT-Intermediate certification examination. Unlike the EMT-Basic program, this curriculum is only available at the Augusta campus.

Diploma in Paramedic Technology

This program prepares students for the highest level of EMT certification and requires previous certification at the EMT-Basic level. Over five quarters, individuals learn and develop skills for careers as paramedics by training in advanced emergency care. Course content includes, but isn't limited to, pathophysiology, cardiology, pharmacology and special patients. Graduates are eligible to take the NREMT paramedic certification test, which meets the national and Georgia guidelines for paramedic licensure.
