EMT Certification in North Carolina

In North Carolina, there are several different licensing levels for emergency medical technicians. These options include emergency medical technician (EMT), EMT-intermediate (EMT-I), medical responder (MR), emergency medical dispatch (EMD) and EMT-paramedic (EMT-P). To be licensed, students typically have to complete an approved educational program and then pass practical and written examinations. There are roughly 17 out of 129 schools in North Carolina offering EMT courses and programs.

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College

There are non-bridging and bridging options for emergency medical science majors attending Ashville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville. Both of these options result in an Associate in Applied Science degree. The bridging program takes only a year to complete and it consists of 34 credit hours. In the 76 credit hour program, students spend the first semester learning about pre-hospital environments, emergency vehicles and basic emergency medical technology.

Catawba Valley Community College

Students can earn a paramedic advancement certificate or an associate's degree in emergency medical science at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. In the associate's degree program, students take classes on cardiology, EMS management, trauma emergencies, life span emergencies and rescue scene management. There is also coursework available in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and intermediate interventions. Students in the certificate program study similar coursework in addition to learning about special needs patients, airway management and patient assessment.

Coastal Carolina Community College

An associate's degree is obtainable by bridging and non-bridging emergency medical science students in Jacksonville at Coastal Carolina Community College. The bridging program is intended for licensed paramedics who want to obtain an associate's degree. Students pursuing that route take coursework on rescue scene management, EMS management and professional reporting and research. New students pursuing the non-bridging associate's degree program can learn about EMT-basic, intermediate inventions and cardiology. There are also several clinical practicum opportunities.

Davidson County Community College

Emergency medical science students at Davidson County Community College in Thomasville can pick from certificate options, associate's degree options and bridging options. The certificate program is for high school students and graduates from the program can go on to enroll in an associate's degree program. In addition to coursework in EMS communication, patient assessment and trauma emergencies, students have to complete a capstone class in the associate's degree program. To earn an associate's degree, roughly 66 credits are needed.

Fayetteville Technical Community College

Certificate and associate's degree options for non-bridging and bridging emergency medical science students can be found in Fayetteville at Fayetteville Technical Community College. The certificate program consists of 13 credits in courses covering EMS management, EMS communication and emergency vehicles, rescue scene management and EMT-basic. Students that are looking to earn an associate's degree have to complete these same courses. However, associate's degree students also have to study pharmacology, public speaking, medical emergencies and trauma emergencies as well as complete clinical experiences.

Forsyth Technical Community College

Students can enroll in an emergency medical science associate's degree program at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston Salem. In addition, there is a bridging option here for certified paramedics who don't have an associate's degree. The bridging option is comprised of 29 credit hours on EMS management, rescue scene management, ethics and anatomy and physiology. Students that are starting off fresh in the associate's degree program need to complete at least 71 credit hours over topics like lifespan emergencies, medical emergencies, special needs patients, psychology, cardiology and advanced patient assessment.

Gaston College

Regular and bridging associate's degree options are available in Dallas at Gaston College for emergency medical science majors. Along with instruction through classroom lectures, this program has clinical experiences in hospitals, internships in the field with EMS organizations and laboratory sessions to practice practical skills. Courses that are related to the emergency medical science at this school include microbiology, anatomy and physiology, psychology, research and reporting and intercultural communication. Patient assessment, EMS communications, airway management, pharmacology and intermediate intervention are just a few of the other classes here for EMTs.

Guilford Technical Community College

Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown is home to standard and bridging associate's degree programs in emergency medical science. Students in the standard program spend the first semester taking classes on expository writing, vehicle operations and EMS communication and basic EMT studies. Students in the bridge program instead spend the first semester on psychology, pharmacology and anatomy and physiology. Other coursework related to EMS at this school includes the following: advanced trauma emergencies, advanced medical emergencies, lifespan emergencies and special needs patients.

Wake Technical Community College

Students can pursue an Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Science at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh. The general education portion of this program requires students to learn about writing, mathematical measurement, interpersonal communication, anatomy and physiology and psychology. Once focused on the major classes, students learn about cardiology, pharmacology, instructor methodology and EMS management. At the end of the program, a capstone course is required.

Western Carolina University

Western Carolina University has a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Care degree program in the city of Cullowhee. In this program, students have to pick between a health services management option and a science option. The latter program is intended for students who are planning on continuing their education to graduate or medical school. If students don't want to attend the Cullowhee campus, there are options for an online program. The major coursework for this program includes the following: acute fluid and respiratory disorders, basic ECG interpretation, clinical medicine introduction, simulation laboratory, trauma management and child and maternal emergency care.
