EMT Certification Programs in Central Indiana

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs generally consist of comprehensive training that prepares students to provide medical care and emergency trauma care. Most schools offer both certificate and degree options. Some programs combine EMT-Basic training and advanced paramedic training into one degree program. Students who complete a training program then need to receive state certification to work in the field. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) provides certification exams and credentials.

Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis

Indiana-University-Purdue University in Indianapolis provides comprehensive training options to students interested in working as EMTs or paramedics. The school offers two distinct program options. Students who are new to the field can pursue an EMT-Basic certificate. Individuals who have already received their basic certification can pursue an associate degree in paramedic studies.

The EMT-Basic program is a standard course that is open to all university students. Individuals learn how to provide basic emergency care and are trained to work in a pre-hospital setting, such as an ambulance. Once a student completes the course they must pursue state certification before they can work.

Students interested in more advanced training can look at the university's associate degree program in paramedic studies. Completing the curriculum will prepare a student for EMT-Paramedic certification. This program's training is designed to prepare students to work both within and outside a hospital setting and provide emergency medical care to trauma patients. Students receive both didactic and classroom instruction in addition to practical training. The program includes a field internship and clinical training.

Ivy Tech Community College

Ivy Tech Community College offers courses on several campuses in a handful of locations. Students interested in EMT training will find two programs at the school's Indianapolis campus. Students who are new to the discipline can pursue a certificate in basic emergency medical studies. This program is engineered to introduce new prospective EMTs to the field. Training includes both practical and clinical instruction and will prepare students for state certification.

Students who already possess an EMT-Basic certification credential can pursue an associate degree in paramedic sciences. This program accepts a limited amount of students each academic year. Students can look into state paramedic certification once they complete the program training. Additionally, the curriculum of this program can help prepare students to pursue a baccalaureate degree at a four-year institution.

Vincennes University

Vincennes University, located in Vincennes also offers EMT training to interested central Indiana students. This school offers a one-year certificate and a two-year associate degree program designed for prospective paramedics. Students interested in the certificate program are required to hold an EMT-Basic certification, however the associate degree program includes EMT-Basic training as part of its curriculum. The degree program also includes EMT-Basic field training during the second year of training. Students also complete a summer internship in which they are required to ride along in an ambulance as well as complete clinical work.
