Oklahoma City Community College's EMT Certification Programs

Founded in 1969, Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) is a 2-year college with a range of degree and certificate programs. Approximately 28,000 students attend Oklahoma City Community College. Students obtain emergency medical technician (EMT) certification through a variety of programs at OCCC.

EMT-Basic Certification

A prerequisite for the paramedic and A.A.S. programs, the EMT-basic certification course requires a minimum of eight credits. Training includes patient assessment, triage and medical emergencies. Students divide their time between the classroom and field settings. Graduate of the program can sit for the EMT-basic certification exam administered by National Registry of EMT (NREMT).

Paramedic Certification

The paramedic certification program provides the same level of education as the A.A.S. degree without the general education coursework. EMT students complete a minimum of 52 credits, including courses in patient assessment, airway management, trauma, medical (i.e. urology, toxicology and neurology) and operations (i.e. ambulance operation). Clinical experience is required and occurs in Oklahoma City hospitals and field settings. After completing courses, labs and clinicals, students take the NREMT paramedic exam to become certified.

Associate in Applied Science in Emergency Medical Science

In the A.A.S. degree program, students acquire advanced EMT skills through classroom work and clinical experience. Experienced medical personnel teach the classes and prepare students to take the National Registry examination at the paramedic level. General education courses complete the A.A.S. degree. Prerequisites for the program include EMT-basic certification, CPR and training in airborne and blood pathogens.

Rogers State University's EMT Certification Programs

Rogers State University (RSU) offers EMT certification through the emergency health sciences program, which began in 1991. RSU is a small college of 4,000 students known for small class sizes and low tuition rates. RSU is conveniently located in Claremore, 30 miles from Tulsa. Students interested in pursuing EMT certification can enroll in the A.A.S. program or complete the EMT-basic program.

EMT-Basic Certification

A class in blood-borne pathogens must be taken along with other EMT-basic coursework. Skills in shock treatment, triage and CPR are gained through completion of the EMT-basic program. Graduates may seek certification at the EMT-basic level by sitting for the NREMT-basic exam. This course is a prerequisite for the paramedic program.

Associate of Applied Science-EMS

Prerequisites for the A.A.S. program include EMT-basic certification and microcomputer applications. This 2-year program includes clinical fieldwork in addition to coursework in trauma assessment, cardiac emergencies and pharmacology. The degree program prepares students for the national certification exam. Graduates, who successfully complete the national exam, are qualified for entry-level paramedic positions.
