- Goodwin College's EMT program is at the paramedic level. The school is located approximately three miles southwest of downtown East Hartford.
Capital Community College
Formed in 1992 through a merger between Hartford Community College and Harford State Technical College, Capital Community College (CCC) is a 2-year college with an annual enrollment of over 4,000 students. In addition to 35 associate's degree programs and 27 certificate programs, CCC also offers online education.
Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Certificate
This EMT program trains participants to provide life support and pre-hospital care to individuals in emergency situations. The curriculum includes classroom lectures, laboratory work, supervised clinical education and internships. Participants become certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Upon completion, they can take the NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) exam, along with a practical skills exam. Passing both exams is a requirement to obtain national certification.
Emergency Medical Technician - Emergency Management Response Certificate
This program trains individuals to respond to emergency situations. Courses cover emergency management training techniques. The program is made up of nine credits divided among three classes.
Emergency Medical Services Instructor Certificate
Certified EMTs learn to teach others how to become competent emergency medical responders. Those with valid EMS certification are eligible for this 3-course program. Participants must be proficient with computers and should have knowledge of PowerPoint. Upon successful completion of this program, graduates can obtain state certification from the State Department of Public Health. An associate's degree option for this program is also available.
Associate in Science in Paramedic Studies
In this 2-year program, a continuation of the paramedic certificate program, participants study the anatomy and physiology of the human body and learn the proper responses to emergencies. They also complete internships that include lectures, clinical education and field experiences.
Associate in Science in Paramedic Studies: Emergency Management Response
This program, an extension of the certificate program, teaches students how disease affects the body and the best ways to hinder it. Participants also study the administration of pre-hospital care through courses that include topics like hazardous environments and disaster management principles.
Founded in 1999, Goodwin College was originally the Data Institute Business School. It is a 4-year college with an annual enrollment of more than 2,000 students. It offers bachelor's degree, associate's degree and certificate programs, including an option for aspiring EMT-Paramedics.
Upon completion of this certificate program, students are eligible to test for paramedic licensure in Connecticut. They may also opt to sit for the NREMT exam. EMT classes include emergency planning, first responder training, emergency management and medical terminology. In addition to classroom lectures, students complete field work and internships, where they can put to use what they've learned in the classroom.
