EMT Classes and Courses in Rhode Island

In Rhode Island, applicants who want to become basic emergency medical technicians (EMT-B) must possess a high school diploma or an equivalent degree, be of good character, complete an approved CPR course, be at least 18 years of age and take an approved EMT class. After graduating from a basic EMT course, students must then pass written and practical licensing examinations. Licensed EMT-Bs can an EMT-Cardiac license by taking an EMT-Cardiac course and passing the necessary licensing examinations.

There are only 3 colleges or universities that offer EMT classes in the state of Rhode Island, though some private organizations and fire departments offer state-approved programs as well. Additional details about approved training programs are available through the State of Rhode Island Department of Health.

Brown University

In addition to CPR training classes, a basic EMT training course is available at Brown University in Providence. Training and practice drills take place at the Warren Fire Department, while practical skill and lecture courses occur on the school's campus. The basic EMT class typically meets 2 nights a week as well as most of the day on Sunday. Students learn about patient assessment, medication administration, immobilization, airway management and injury management. Additionally, students spend some class time observing at a hospital and riding along in an ambulance.

Community College of Rhode Island

The Community College of Rhode Island's fire science program includes a basic emergency medical technician course, and classes for that program are offered at the school's campuses in Warwick, Lincoln and Providence. In addition to general education requirements, students learn about hazardous materials, fire prevention and fire-fighting strategies. The EMT-Basic course includes lecture sessions and field-based training. The fire science program requires a background check and current vaccinations.

University of Rhode Island

Located in Kingston, the University of Rhode Island has EMT classes in basic, cardiac and refresher formats. The 911 Programs of South County team up with the University of Rhode Island to offer these courses. The basic EMT class takes 12 weeks to complete and typically meets in the evening on Mondays and Wednesdays as well as from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays. Only 18 students are allowed into the basic EMT course at a single time. The cardiac EMT class is an advanced option for students who are already basic EMTs and want to learn about advanced cardiac life support. The EMT refresher class is intended for EMT students who need to meet continuing education requirements for their state license.
