University of Vermont's EMT Programs

The University of Vermont (UVM) is a 4-year public college located in Burlington, Vermont. Nearly 13,000 students are enrolled in a variety of undergraduate, graduate and first professional degree programs as well as certificate programs at UVM. The University of Vermont at Burlington is one of a small number of colleges in the state offering EMT classes.

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) Course

This 110-hour EMT course consists of lecture classes and practical skill labs. Students learn to assess a patient's condition and injuries, provide emergency medical care and safely move and position patients for transport. Upon completion of this basic skills program, students are eligible to become certified at the state and national levels through the Vermont Department of Health and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate Course

This course includes 104 hours of lecture and lab work, as well as clinical experience. The EMT-Basic course discussed above is a prerequisite for this program. Instruction includes intravenous therapy, advanced assessment, pharmacological interventions and advanced airway. Students are prepared to become certified emergency medical technicians in the state of Vermont.

EMT-B Refresher Course

In the state of Vermont, EMT's are required to keep their skills up-to-date through continuing education. This 24 credit-hour EMT-B refresher course meets these state requirements. Curriculum follows the national standard for EMT refresher courses and is approved by the Vermont Department of Health Office of EMS and Injury Prevention.

Vermont Technical College's EMT Programs

Vermont Technical College (VMT) is a small 4-year public college located in Randolph Center, Vermont. VMT's fire science program offers an allied health science course in emergency medical service.

Emergency Medical Service Course

This semester-long course combines clinical practice, classroom instruction and laboratory work, which prepares students to work as emergency medical technicians. Course requirements include mandatory hospital and emergency service experience. Upon completion of this course, students are eligible to take state and national exams to become certified emergency medical technicians. Additional hands-on experience can be gained by volunteering with Vermont Tech First Responders, an organization that responds to the emergency medical needs of students on campus.
