EMT Classes in Minnesota with Certification Program Overviews
Two schools in Minnesota offer individuals interested in emergency medical services (EMS) the opportunity to obtain a certificate or degree in that field. Both Hennepin Technical College and Century Community and Technical College are located in suburbs of the Twin Cities.
Century Community and Technical College's EMT Programs
Century Community and Technical College is a 2-year, public college with several EMS programs. The school, located in White Bear Lake, also offers emergency medical professionals refresher courses through its continuing education program.
Emergency First Responder Program
This 2-credit, first responder class is a requirement for many of the EMS programs. However, individuals working in the rescue field, such as police officers, can also take the class for first responder training. The school also offers a refresher course in first response for those who require this type of continuing education.
Emergency Medical Services Certificate Program
The 16-credit, Emergency Medical Services certificate program covers basic life support subjects. Included in its requirements are four credits of general education classes.
Emergency Medical Technician Certificate Program
The Emergency Medical Technician certificate program consists of six semesters. A 10-hour observation in a clinical setting is a part of the program.
Diploma Program for the Paramedic Technician
Individuals with an EMT certification can deepen their knowledge and skills with the Paramedic Technician diploma program. Besides completing an internship, students take advanced courses in pharmacology, cardiac physiology and other medical care subjects. This is a 6-semester program with 59 credits.
Associate of Applied Science in Paramedic Technology Program
The Paramedic Technology A.A.S. degree program content is similar to the Paramedic Technician diploma program. However, totaling 76 credits, the A.A.S. degree program also requires general education classes.

Hennepin Technical College's EMT Programs
Hennepin Technical College (HTC) is a 2-year, public school with campuses in Brooklyn Park and Eden Prairie. Emergency medical services classes take place on the Eden Prairie campus. Many of the EMS programs and refresher courses are also offered through Customized Training and Continuing Education at HTC.
Emergency First Responder Program
The first responder certificate program at Hennepin Technical College is comprised of 24 classroom hours. Students learn through hands-on training and online lessons.
Emergency Medical Services Specialist Certificate Program
The EMS Specialist certificate program prepares individuals for entry-level jobs in ambulance service. The program consists of 26 credits and includes 80 hours of ambulance internship.
Emergency Room Technician Certificate Program
Students in the Emergency Room Technician certificate program must complete 20 credits of coursework and training. Some of the basic skills covered are blood drawing, wound cleaning, EKG testing and IV setup. The program also includes clinical observation at a metro-area emergency room.
