Schools and Training Programs

Aspiring and professional EMTs in Maine can find educational programs providing basic, intermediate or advanced studies in this field. Students can pursue a certificate, which in some cases can be earned in one year or less, or a 2-year degree that trains students for more advanced roles as paramedics. These programs consist of classroom studies in addition to internships and clinical training in actual emergency care settings. Clinical training generally comprises hundreds of hours assisting in the care of trauma or ill patients. Graduates of these types of programs are prepared to take necessary state licensing exams. Details about two Maine community colleges with EMT courses, located in and near the populous areas of Portland and Augusta, are found below.

Southern Maine Community College's EMT Program

About 5,500 students attend Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), located in South Portland, Maine. They can choose from more than 40 degree programs, and among these programs is an associate's degree in paramedicine.

Associate in Applied Science in Paramedicine

Individuals who have 6 months' experience as licensed emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are eligible for this degree program. The paramedicine program builds upon the skills acquired through basic EMT programs. EMT classes include pathophysiology, anatomy and physiology, paramedic procedures, trauma management, medical emergencies, cardiology, rescue operations and clinical practicums. The clinical practicums make up 700 hours of the program, and through them, students spend time working in hospitals, medical facilities and ambulances.

This certificate requires three semesters for completion.
