Hudson Valley Community College

To enroll in this school's EMT program, students must meet math and biology requirements and attend an information session with the program coordinator. Students may also need to pass a criminal background check and a drug screening before participating in the clinical training segment of this program.

Associate in Applied Science Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic

Although the program was designed for students wishing to become paramedics, successfully completing the first year of training will qualify students to become an EMT-Basic. Required courses to earn this designation consist of two classes, one of which is an internship that students may be disqualified from taking if they don't perform in a satisfactory manner during the pre-clinical course. If a student chooses to complete the entire program, he or she can complete paramedic training in five terms.

One other school option is SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, which offers a Paramedic Associate of Applied Science program that includes EMT training in the first semester. This school is just under an hour away from Albany. The New York State Bureau of EMS certification also offers suggestions for EMT training classes that aren't associated with colleges. Western Turnpike Rescue Squad, Inc. offers an EMT course, and the program is located only ten miles from downtown. The City of Albany offers an EMT course at Albany High School, which is only six minutes from downtown and allows students to earn credits that can be used in college.
