Schools and Programs
Emergency medical technician (EMT) training is available at technical colleges in Georgia at the basic, intermediate and paramedic levels. Students can earn a certificate, diploma or associate's degree in these programs. Some schools offer EMT training at multiple campuses. EMT and paramedic training programs prepare students to take certification exams. Lower level EMT training must be completed before students can start a higher level of training. The two schools listed below offer EMT training at a number of different levels.
Central Georgia Technical College's EMT Training Program
Central Georgia Technical College is a 2-year community college, serving over 5,000 students in Macon, Georgia. EMT training is offered at the Macon, Putnam County and Crawford County campuses.
EMT-Intermediate Technical Certificate
Student enrolled in this program first complete the EMT-Basic course and take the NREMT (National Registry of EMTs) certification basic exam. They then go on to learn advance techniques in life support. Courses include patient assessment, airway management, trauma emergencies and management and pharmacology. Students must also complete practicals and clinicals. When all coursework is done, students take the NREMT intermediate exam in order to become certified at the intermediate level.
Paramedic Technology Diploma
Students applying to this program must have EMT certification and a high school diploma. Students take paramedic specific courses in respiratory emergencies, trauma, cardiology, emergencies in maternal pediatrics and special patients. Along with coursework, students complete a number of clinicals. Students who finish the program can write the NREMT paramedic certification exam.
Associate of Applied Science in Paramedic Technology
Students are training to become paramedics. They take courses specific to the paramedic profession and general education courses. Occupational courses include patient assessment, pathophysiology, applied physiology, respiratory emergencies, trauma and cardiology, along with completion of various clinicals. The program also includes courses in microcomputers, math, anatomy, physiology, English and public speaking. Graduates sit for the paramedic NREMT exam for certification.

Lanier Technical College's EMT Training Program
Lanier is part of the Technical College System in Georgia. It offers technical and career education programs leading to certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. In the field of EMT, credits from Lanier may be transferred to Gainesville State College's associate and bachelor's programs.
EMT - Basic Certificate
This certificate introduces students to the EMT profession. They take courses in patient assessment, trauma emergencies and clinical and practical applications. Graduate who pass the NREMT basic exam are certified EMT-Basic.
Students continue their EMT training beyond the basic level. Program concentrates on advance life support. Graduates take the intermediate exam administered by NREMT to become certified.
Paramedic Technology Degree
A prerequisite of the program is EMT certification. Courses include general education credits in the humanities, behavioral and social sciences, math, natural science and public speaking. Paramedic-related courses include clinicals, special patients and medical emergencies among others. Before applying for a position, graduates must pass the NREMT paramedic certification exam.
