EMT Training in Pennsylvania with Class and Course Descriptions

Individuals who want to work or volunteer as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in Pennsylvania need at least a certificate of completion from an accredited EMT training program. At Delaware County Community College, students can earn a certificate or pursue a paramedic associate's degree. Delaware County Community College's EMT Training Programs

EMT programs at Delaware County Community College (DCCC) are offered through the public safety division of the Technical Education Department. Students who complete the EMT certificate program will have the necessary credentials to begin entry-level work in the field. EMTs who want to become paramedics can continue their education at Delaware and earn an associate's degree at one of three campus locations.

Certificate of Competency - Emergency Medical Services Technology

EMTs often find themselves making difficult decisions in stressful situations. In DCCC's certificate program, students are trained to deal with these circumstances in a professional manner. During the 31- credit-hour program, students are taught how to safely operate emergency vehicles, how to assess a patient's condition and provide the appropriate care, and how to work effectively as part of a team.

Associate in Applied Science Degree: Paramedic - Advanced Life Support (EMT-P)

This program was developed in consideration of the Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic National Standard Curriculum. Class topics include patient assessment, psychology, anatomy, physiology and life support. Students are required to complete a total of 63 credit-hours, and the program can be completed on a part-time schedule. Students who are interested in sitting for the national registry exam for paramedics can do so after successful completion of 40 credit-hours of core classes and eight credit-hours of anatomy and physiology classes.

Northhampton County Area Community College's EMT Training Programs

Located in Bethlehem, PA, Northhampton County Area Community College offers two programs that can be completed on a full- or part-time basis. Individuals who already work in the field may qualify to complete some courses tuition-free.

Specialized Diploma - Emergency Medical Technician

Individuals interested in becoming EMTs can use this program to gain the credentials they need to work as quickly as possible. Current EMTs can also use this program to augment their existing knowledge and skills. Students complete a total of 16 credit-hours in core courses and nine credit-hours in elective credits. All of the 26 credit hours granted through this program are transferable to the associate's degree program.

Associate in Applied Science Degree - Emergency Services Technology

Designed for recent high school graduates as well as professionals that want to expand their current skill base, the 62-credit-hour program can be completed in four years if done on a part-time basis. Students are taught how to apply their decision-making skills and problem solving abilities to emergency medical situations. They are also taught how to function effectively and efficiently as part of an emergency team. Course topics include basic training for EMTs, patient immobilization and lifting, vehicle rescue and patient assessment.
