The Syracuse, New York, area has few options to choose from for studying to become an emergency medical technician (EMT). Upstate Medical University (Upstate), affiliated with the State University of New York (SUNY) system, is the parent organization of the only academic medical center in Central New York. EMT Training Programs at Upstate Medical University

The training courses and program offered by Upstate are provided by the university's Emergency Medicine Simulation Technology and Training (EM-STAT) Center. The center provides access to resources such as 'smart' classrooms with additional technological features to enhance students' experiences and simulation technology for skills practice prior to field opportunities.

EMT - Basic Course

The EMT - Basic course offered by Upstate takes a little over four months to complete. The curriculum is made up of 135 hours spent in the classroom and a clinical rotation of 12 hours served in a local hospital or with an approved ambulance service. Students are trained in caring for injured and ill patients in out-of-hospital settings. An EMT - Basic refresher course also is available for $335.

EMT - Intermediate Course

The EMT - Intermediate class continues training students beyond the basic EMT level. A total of 39 hours are spent in the classroom in addition to tutorials, completed over a 3-month time frame. Skills emphasized include administration of intravenous fluids, defibrillation, and life-support for trauma patients. An EMT - Intermediate refresher course also is available for $350.

Paramedic Certificate Program

The paramedic program at Upstate requires completion of 1,200 hours of didactic instruction and 300 hours of clinical rotations in local hospitals, as well as 300 hours earned through a field internship. The program can be completed in about 14 months. Applicants to the program must be currently certified as an EMT - Basic provider, at least 18 years old, and have some experience in the field. Other prerequisites include a high school diploma or equivalent, three letters of recommendation, successful completion of written and practical exams, and an entrance interview. The program's curriculum is comprehensive and covers medical training related to geriatrics, pharmacology, and neonatology. The job placement rate for graduates of Upstate's paramedic program is 100%.

EMT Training Programs at Mohawk Valley Community College

The A.A.S. EMS/Paramedic program at MVCC is available through cooperative efforts by the college, the Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare EMS Center, and SUNYIT (State University of New York Institute of Technology). Graduates of the program can continue their education at SUNYIT to earn a bachelor's degree in health services management.

Associate of Applied Science, Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic

Students interested in the program must hold current certification as an EMT - Basic and have successfully completed a chemistry class with lab work and a math course 'A' or its equivalent at the high school level. The program requires the completion of 73 credit hours of coursework; 36 credit hours are transferred from the Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare EMS Center and earned by the successful completion of four levels of paramedic classes, and 37 credit hours are earned through MVCC general education courses. The curriculum has been designed to meet the training needs of individuals pursuing careers as firefighters, ambulance attendants, and law enforcement personnel, as well as paramedics.

Other School Options

EMT training classes are also available through a cooperative effort by the Onondaga County EMS Bureau and the Onondaga Community College Public Safety Training Center, also located in Syracuse, New York. The Syracuse University Ambulance organization offers EMT training classes, sponsored by Rural Metro Medical Services, on an irregular basis.
