New Jersey Schools with EMT Training Programs
New Jersey residents seeking basic or advanced EMT training can look to a few 2-year colleges throughout the state. These schools offer certificate and associate degree programs for aspiring or current EMTs. The two main levels of emergency medical technician training are EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic. Paramedic programs typically require that applicants possess EMT-Basic certification.

- Camden County College offers a basic EMT program as well as paramedic studies at the certificate and associate degree levels. The college is located in Blackwood, New Jersey, about 15 miles south of downtown Philadelphia.
- Union County College is situated in Cranford, New Jersey, roughly 12 miles southwest of downtown Newark. The school has EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic certificate programs.
Camden County College
Camden County College is a 2-year public school with three campuses. For those seeking advanced degrees, credits can be transferred to 4-year schools throughout New Jersey. The school provides the Health Careers Opportunities Program to help place graduates into health-related careers.
Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certificate
This EMT-Basic training program adheres to certification requirements for New Jersey. Program graduates may also take the national exam but it is not required. All applicants must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, be at least 18 years old and CPR-certified; they must also not have any prior convictions. The EMT-Basic training regimen requires 150 hours of in-class instruction with ten hours in a clinical setting, five hours with an emergency department and five hours riding with an ambulance. Students who complete this course are given five college credits.
All applicants to this program must have current EMT-B certification from New Jersey, Pennsylvania or New York. Enrollees can choose to enter the day, evening, hybrid or strictly online program. Paramedic certification qualifies recipients to begin work in clinics, trauma units and other paramedic centers.
Associate in Applied Sciences - Paramedic
While enrolled in the paramedic certificate program, students may decide to receive an associate's degree in the field. To receive this degree, student must take an additional 23 credits of general education studies. Graduates are prepared to advance their careers by becoming registered nurses or healthcare administrators. For managerial positions, additional education and experience may be necessary for those with an associate's degree.
Union County College
Union County College is the oldest community college in New Jersey. This public school has transfer agreements allowing those with 2-year degrees to pursue further education at other state institutions. Distance-learning and continuing education certificates are also available.
This EMT training program offers a traditional lecture setting with hands-on opportunities. Students complete 110 credit-hours of coursework with an extra ten hours spent in a local hospital's emergency room. Before beginning the program, all enrollees must have professional-level CPR certification. At the end of the course, all students must pass a written exam to become licensed as EMT-Basics.
Paramedics in New Jersey work mainly out of hospitals, but they can find careers with fire departments, ambulance services, police departments or hospitals. EMT-Paramedics undergo advanced training to use emergency equipment, like deliberators, oxygen tanks and airway devices. They also learn to administer medications, such as through IV.
Potential enrollees need to have at least one year of experience. All students need to have CPR certification, hospital sponsorship and nine credits of general education to graduate. They must also pass a basic skills test, showing competency in algebra and other areas.
