Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Technical Competency Area

Students earn a total of 8 credits in this program. They learn the basic skills and knowledge needed to perform emergency lifesaving techniques before a patient is transported to the hospital. A laboratory class must be taken alongside the main EMT course.

Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate Technical Competency Area

Applicants must meet Louisiana Bureau of Emergency Medical Services eligibility requirements to enter this 11-credit program. In addition to the EMT intermediate course, which focuses on management and assessment of pre-hospital patients, students take a seminar, a clinical practicum and a lab class. Intravenous (IV) therapy and advanced airway techniques are among the skills developed during the program.

Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Certificate of Technical Studies

This 16-month program accepts students only once a year, with an application deadline of April 30. Students must be nationally registered as EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate and be licensed in Louisiana to apply. To earn the certificate, students must complete 32 credit hours with a 'C' or better in all coursework. Topics covered include obstetrical and pediatric emergencies, emergency cardiac care, advanced airway management, trauma and medical emergencies, patient assessment, emergency communications and medical law. Labs and practical experience, such as field observation of emergency teams, are major elements of the program.

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Technical Competency Area

To enter this 7-credit program, students must meet developmental reading requirements and receive permission from EMT faculty. The emergency medical technician course covers national standard-level life-saving techniques and includes class, lab, clinical and field observation experience. Basic EMT skills focus on airway obstruction management, CPR, hazardous substance response and defensive driving of emergency vehicles. To graduate, a 'C' or better must be earned in both courses.

Paramedic Certificate of Technical Studies

Applicants must possess proficiency in CPR, a Louisiana EMT license and national registration as an EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate to enter this 33-credit paramedic certificate program. Students can expect to study anatomy and physiology, as well as receive advanced training in patient assessment and care, airway management, response to trauma, medical and cardiac situations, pediatric and obstetrical emergencies and special situations that could involve hazardous materials or rescue.
