Comparison of New York City Engineering Technology Schools

The New York City area has a variety of degree programs for aspiring engineering technicians and/or technologists that are located within 30 miles from New York City. The New York City College of Technology (City Tech) is a part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, which allows engineering technology students to benefit from many resources, such as library services and research centers. Additionally, City Tech allows students to choose from diverse specializations in engineering technology. The New York Institute of Technology is one of the few area schools that offer both bachelor's and associate's degree programs in engineering technology. While Nassau Community College doesn't offer a bachelor's degree program, it does offer the lowest tuition rates of the three schools.

Degrees at New York City College of Technology

City Tech offers various engineering technology degrees through three departments, including the Department of Construction Management & Civil Engineering Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology and Department of Electrical & Telecommunications Engineering Technology. In addition to engineering technology, the mechanical and civil engineering departments offer programs in construction management and industrial design technology.

Associate in Applied Science in Telecommunications Engineering Technology

City Tech participates in the Verizon's Next Step Program, which allows employees at the telecommunications company to enroll in customized associate's degree programs, such as this one in telecommunications engineering technology. This 67-credit program trains students in areas such as data transmission, telecommunications installation and data communication. In addition to coursework, students can participate in an internship.

Associate in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering Technology

Students learn both practical and theoretical skills through lectures and lab projects in electronic and electrical circuits and systems. Graduates can execute an array of professional tasks, such as finding electronic component positions on panels, conducting cost estimates and assisting with the construction of prototype equipment. Classes include digital electronics, circuit analysis, communication electronics and electrical drafting.

Associate in Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology

Students are trained for technician and assistant careers in areas such as metallurgy, production planning, plant layout and materials testing. The curriculum investigates areas such as machine design, solids modeling, thermodynamics and computer-aided manufacturing. In the final semester of the program, students can complete a machine design course or internship.

Associate in Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology

Courses cover areas such as soils, statistics, fluid mechanics and hydraulics. The program prepares students for Level 1 Field Inspector certification from the American Concrete Institute. Students learn to communicate effectively, determine stresses for structures, solve technical problems and produce engineering documents.

Bachelor of Technology in Telecommunications Engineering Technology

City Tech's bachelor's degree program in telecommunication engineering technology is an expansion of the associate's degree program. Students deepen their knowledge in areas such as analog communications, satellite transmission, switching theory and telecommunications network management. In addition, students can specialize in one of three areas, which include wireless communications, optical communications and network management. An optional internship is also available.

Degrees at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT)

The School of Engineering and Computer Sciences' department of electrical and computer engineering technology offers computer and software training to aspiring engineering technologists. Students learn through the school's updated labs, classroom-based theoretical training and by working up-close with expert staff members.

Associate in Applied Science in Electrical Technology

The electrical technology program includes 63-65 credits of training in electrical and computer systems. Students complete 16 credits in electrical technology courses and 21 credits in computer technology, as well as foundation, math and physics courses. Courses students may encounter include programming techniques, digital electronics and electronics technology.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology

NYIT's 130-132 credit bachelor's degree program in electrical and computer engineering comprises a comprehensive array of courses in areas such as foundations, math, electrical technology, computer technology, engineering management and electives, in addition to a senior capstone project. Electrical technology courses include communication circuits, control systems technology and electrical technology. In addition to hard engineering skills, students may also acquire the ability to communicate and work in teams, creatively solve complex problems and design software computer systems.

Degrees at Nassau Community College (NCC)

NCC offers associate's degree programs in various aspects of engineering technology through its engineering/physics/technologies department. Some of the courses taken here are transferable to four-year schools in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, one of the largest state systems of public colleges and universities in the country.

Associate in Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology

The civil engineering technology program examines residential construction methods, blueprint reading, technical writing, construction estimating and route surveying. The courses in the four-semester program can be completed both on-campus and online, and it is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Associate in Applied Science in Electrical Engineering Technology

Coursework delves into areas such as reactive circuits, resistive circuits, digital technology and interpersonal communication. Graduates from this program may find employment in a variety of industries and fields, including aerospace, energy conversion, communications and digital computer controls. Students learn about technical practices employed in the field, fundamental concepts of currents and voltage and the steady response of circuits.
