Houston Schools with English Programs

Individual English classes aren't hard to come by at most schools since coursework in the subject is often part of college general education requirements. Those looking for English degree options, however, can turn to about five schools around Houston. This article emphasizes the required courses for three universities and includes a table of stats on each institution. A bit of information on a couple of other program options is provided too.

  • Texas Southern University, located about three miles from downtown Houston, has bachelor's and master's degree options in English.
  • Also situated close to the heart of downtown is the University of Houston, which is just three miles from the city center. Along with a bachelor's degree program, students can pursue master's and doctoral degree programs in the field.
  • Those who are interested in a private, not-for-profit school might consider the University of Saint Thomas, which is about four miles from central Houston. This school features a bachelor's degree program in English with two specialization options.

Texas Southern University

In addition to its degree programs in English, TSU offers an online writing lab that provides tutoring to students in writing composition, resume writing and MLA formatting.

Bachelor of Arts in English

The curriculum for this bachelor's degree program allows students to take classes in world literature, mythology in literature, novels, literature and film, women's literature and Latin American literature. There are also several workshops for students in areas like creative writing, grammar review and fiction. For students interested in teaching, there is a certification track, in addition to the general English studies route.

Master of Arts in English

Students can choose between thesis and non-thesis options in this Master of Arts in English program. The non-thesis option is a general track, while the thesis option allows students to specialize in British literature, African American literature or American literature. Regardless of which route students take, this master's degree can be earned with 30 credit hours worth of work. Courses at the graduate level cover methods of research, literary theory, literary biography and modern poetry.

University of Houston

Several e-book collections are accessible at this school for student use. The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral English programs in a variety of specializations.

Bachelor of Arts in English

Students in this bachelor's degree program can pick from one of the following specializations: literature, linguistics or creative writing. The literature option focuses on American and British literature, although there is room for students to explore their own interest in another area like Mexican American literature or gay/lesbian literature. For the linguistics track, students can learn about English syntax and the history of English. The creative writing program offers two awards each year to notable students enrolled in the program.

Master of Arts in English and American Literature

A total of 36 credit hours must be earned to graduate from this master's degree program. This is broken up into 30 hours of literature, three hours of literary theory and rhetoric, and three hours of research and bibliography methods. To apply to the program, students have to submit a statement of intent, GRE test scores, three letters of recommendation and a writing sample.

Doctor of Philosophy in English and American Literature

A dissertation, three written examinations, one oral examination and a foreign language requirement have to be completed to earn the Ph.D. in English. The curriculum is composed of 36 credit hours and covers areas like early literature. Electives for the program depend on the individual interests of the student. For students wishing to pursue a specific concentration, there is an option in rhetoric, composition and pedagogy. Students must have a master's degree to apply to this program.

University of Saint Thomas

Literature and writing are the two concentrations English majors can pick from at the University of Saint Thomas. The school provides a bachelor's degree program in English, as well as a minor in creative writing.

Bachelor of Arts in English

Students in this program take coursework in literary criticism, creative writing, American literature, English literature and advanced prose writing. Papers, examinations and oral presentations are assigned throughout the program. At the end of the program, a creative writing portfolio, thesis or work of expository prose must be presented for review by faculty members.
