Equine Dentistry Schools and Colleges in the U.S.
Equine dentistry is a veterinary specialty offered as an emphasis area in some Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) programs, rather than as a stand-alone degree program at a veterinary school. In the final year of residence while enrolled in a DVM program, a student can specialize in equine science and dentistry.
How to Choose an Equine Dentistry School or College
Students choosing a veterinary school for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with an equine dentistry specialization have typically already completed some undergraduate training, such as a degree in biology or animal science, or a pre-veterinary training program. A student's choice of an equine dentistry program largely focuses on the programs' amount and variation of equine courses, and clinical experiences focusing on equine dentistry and large animal anesthesia.
A DVM program usually takes four years to complete. The first three years of enrollment cover veterinary science. Some of the courses taken during this time include veterinary anatomy, veterinary pathology, veterinary neurobiology, veterinary oncology and emerging infectious diseases. During the final year a student begins to specialize and complete clerkships. During the equine dentistry specialization, students learn about equine science and maintaining healthy teeth in horses.
Future equine dentists can look for programs whose equine science clerkships place vet students at medical centers or clinics that focus on varying aspects of the health and diseases of horses and ponies. Prospective equine dentistry students should also consider the types of clinical experiences offered in the clinical components of the program, including the training for treating a range of dental issues in horses.
