Overview of Courses
Given the hands-on nature of the field, very few schools offer entire equine science programs via distance learning. However, a few schools offer online, standalone equine science classes in topics like horse nutrition or equine management. Review descriptions for online course offerings below.
In this course, students explore the meaning behind different horse behaviors, like tail movements or eating habits. This course may also cover training techniques, like reinforcement and the positive reward system, and students learn how to more effectively interact with horses.
Horse management courses may be broad or limited in scope. Depending on the school, some of these courses cover everything from equine anatomy and physiology to everyday horse care. Classes with a more limited focus may only explore specific topics, like managing stallions or horse management laws.
Horses have very specific nutritional requirements and unique eating habits. They also have delicate digestive systems that require nutritional supplements in addition to daily feed. This course covers the equine digestive system and teaches students how to calculate feeding times based on weight and other factors that affect the horse's feeding schedule and volume.
This course explores the causes and symptoms of several common diseases associated with horses, along with how they affect horse physiology, their origins and how they are treated. Common diseases or disorders covered include lameness, colic and sole bruising, among others.
Students in this course learn how to choose horses for specific purposes, like dressage. They're taught how to evaluate a horse's body, markings and muscle movements.
