California State University (CSU) is a public university with 23 campuses and almost 433,000 students. The Los Angeles campus has been a center of higher education in California for over 60 years. CSU-LA offers a master's degree and a certificate for ESL instructors.

Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is also commonly known as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). California State University in Los Angeles offers a master's degree in TESOL. This instructor training program is a 45-unit curriculum that provides a comprehensive overview of English language learning and teaching theories. Located just over 20 miles outside of Los Angeles, Azusa Pacific University (APU) is a private evangelical Christian school. APU offers the following training programs for ESL instructors and school teachers working with students who do not speak English as a native language.

Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Students enrolled in the Master of Arts - TESOL program at Azusa Pacific University participate in courses that cover language structure and use, foundations of literacy development for English learners, practical approaches and methods of literacy for English learners, and educational equity in a pluralistic society. This 36-unit program usually takes 17 to 24 months to complete at a starting cost of $16,560. APU also offers the program online or as a field-based program for students who are already teaching English abroad.

Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Azusa Pacific University offers a Certificate in TESOL for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree but do not wish to enroll in a graduate program. Average time to complete the 18-unit training program is one year. Credits may be applied to the M.A. TESOL program if desired. The TESOL certificate is also available in a field-based format.

ELL/CTEL Program Leading to Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate

The California Commission for Teacher Credentialing requires teachers in California's schools to be prepared to instruct students learning English. Azusa's English Language Learner (ELL) and California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL) Program Leading to Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development provides the credentials necessary to gain licensure and teach English to non-native speakers in several educational settings in Los Angeles and beyond. The certification program is 12 units and usually takes 4-8 months to complete.
