Exporting is the business of shipping commercial goods out of their country of origin to be distributed internationally. Because there is no specific exporting degree, individuals interested in export training often enroll in a global business training program.
Training Requirements and Recommendations
Most international trade organizations require their export workers to have a bachelor's degree, preferably with an international business concentration. At times, some employers may consider candidates with an associate degree and exporting experience. Proficiency in a second language may be preferred, if not required. Furthermore, knowledge of government trade laws, such as the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and International Traffic in Arms Regulations, are often required.
Individuals interested in working in exporting have options available at certificate levels as well as associate, bachelor's and master's degree levels. Exporting degree programs include foreign language courses to achieve fluency. Many times, students take classes abroad.
Certificate in International Trade
Those with an unrelated degree who seek knowledge of the exporting industry may take a 1-year certificate program. Bachelor's Degree in International Business

Job Experience and Career Information
A bachelor's degree program in international business usually includes at least one internship experience at an export-related business such as an exporting agency or international trade organization. Many employers require individuals to possess 3-5 years of directly related experience, and experience in a particular exporting industry may be preferred. Exporting careers are available as:

Licenses and Certifications
While there are no mandatory licenses required of exporting specialists, there are voluntary certifications. The National Association of Small Business International Trade Educators, more commonly referred to as NASBITE (www.nasbitecgbp.org) offers a Certified Global Business Professional credential to individuals who meet minimum education or work experience requirements and pass their test. Similarly, the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (www.ncbfaa.org) offers a Certified Export Specialist designation to professionals who attend its certification course or meet minimum work experience requirements and pass its exam.
Workshops and Seminars
Importing and exporting organizations, such as NASBITE, often sponsor 3-4 day conferences, for attendees to participate in networking events, view product showcases and hear guest speakers. Topics can include exporting best practices, exporting regulations and documentation procedures. Colleges and trade associations may also host daylong series seminars, with 5-6 sessions on exporting topics.
Additional Professional Development
Exporting professionals can look to online resources, such as the Federation of International Trade Associations (www.fita.org), where they can often find related articles or sign up for industry newsletters. Websites may also upload export-related audio and video files of training seminars, which may last for an hour. Books focusing on trading with particular markets, such as Asia or Latin America, are also available.
