Miami Schools Offering Degrees in Fashion Design

Students interested in studying fashion design in Miami have a couple options. This article looks at two schools, one just six minutes from downtown and the other about 35 minutes away. Both offer undergraduate programs in fashion design. Following information about these institutions and their programs is a table of facts about each school, such as size, tuition and the graduation rate.   • The Art Institute - Miami International University of Art & Design is than two miles from downtown Miami and offers associate and baccalaureate degrees in fashion design.
  • Another option is Keiser University - Ft Lauderdale, about 32 miles from Miami in Ft. Lauderdale. The university has an associate degree program in fashion design and merchandising.

Art Institute - Miami International University of Art & Design

Miami International University of Art & Design is one of 45 schools in the Art Institute system, and the Miami location is efficiently situated in central downtown. Both the associate and baccalaureate programs in fashion design train students to be critical thinkers and developed contributors in the fashion industry.

Associate of Arts - Fashion Design

The 90-credit Associate of Arts in Fashion Design program provides students with the skills needed to enter the fashion industry as entry-level designers, product designers, illustrators, textile designers, technical designers or stylists. Students take 66 credits in core classes and 24 credits of general education. Classes include patternmaking and draping, fashion illustration, fabrics and textiles, history of fashion, computerized patternmaking and fashion trends.

Bachelor of Fine Arts - Fashion Design

The 180-credit Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design program gives students broad-based knowledge and training in the fashion design industry. This program builds on the basic classes taken within the associate program and provides students with more extensive training in tailoring, couture techniques, grading and computerized technologies. Students must complete 112 credits in core classes and 68 general education credits. A three-credit internship and an advanced portfolio class are requirements for graduation. Coursework includes advanced construction, knitwear design, tailoring techniques, computerized textile design, haute couture techniques and menswear design. Another requirement of the program is for students to show their own designs by putting together a collection that is focused on a particular area of design.

Keiser University - Ft. Lauderdale

Keiser University's Ft. Lauderdale branch was established in 1977 and is the main campus in the university's system. A private, career university, Keiser offers an associate degree program in fashion design and merchandising that places a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. The program incorporates both the design and merchandising or retail side of fashion.

Associate of Science in Fashion Design and Merchandising

The 84-credit Associate of Science in Fashion Design and Merchandising gives students a basic understanding of fashion, business, techniques, retail and design within the industry. The program is comprised of 60 credits of core classes and 24 general education credits. Coursework includes apparel construction, fabric study, fashion history, illustration, product development, sewing techniques, computer-assisted design and promotion. Students must present their final portfolio as a last requirement before graduation. Upon completion of the program, graduates will have the skills needed to gain entry-level employment in either the design or retail side of the industry.

Miami Dade College is located less than a mile from downtown Miami and offers a beginning fashion design course through its continuing education program. Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center has a 600-hour fashion design services certificate program that students can take at the school's campus in Miami, less than three miles from downtown. Another option for students is the bachelor's degree program in fashion merchandising and retail marketing at Johnson & Wales University - North Miami, located approximately 12 miles from downtown.
