Fashion Sketching Class and Course Descriptions
Fashion designers must learn to sketch by hand. After learning the basics, designers apply their skills to computer programs used in the field of fashion design such as Photoshop, Illustrator and computer aided design (CAD) programs. Fashion sketching is more often taught from templates than live models. Below are some course descriptions of various fashion sketching classes found at 2 and 4-year colleges and art schools.
Fashion Sketching Courses
Beginning Fashion Sketching
Fashion sketching is one of the first skills that a fashion design student must master, even though the advent of design technology has made it easier to create sketches. This introductory fashion sketching class provides instruction in rendering fashion figures and garments through a variety of media and techniques. Students learn how to draw the basic 9-head figure, adding detail and design. Emphasis is on making quick sketches to depict the human body and clothing while maintaining accurate representation, proportion, tone and depth.
Advanced Fashion Sketching
In advanced fashion sketching, students gain more experience drawing the figure, and learn to use croquis (quick sketches with loose drawings of clothes). Students learn how to capture fashion figure poses on paper, and gain a better understanding of proportion and techniques in sketching. As budding fashion designers develop their own personal style using a variety of drawing techniques, the focus is shifted to movement, flair and attitude in the drawing. Also covered are sketching specs, floats, flats and fabric renderings.
Flat Fashion Sketching
Flats are sketches depicting clothing without figures, a type of drawing commonly found in fashion design. Curriculum focuses on the development of flat sketches to be used for spec sheets, storyboards, merchandising and record keeping. Students also learn to create master slopers (basic garment patterns) that help turn flat sketches into 3-dimensional designs.
CAD Fashion Design
This course introduces students to CAD software programs such as Photoshop, Primavision and Colour Matters. Students learn to create print and woven designs, fashion graphics, digital presentation boards and flats using CAD programs. Also covered are color stories, silhouette, line planning and fabric design.
