Beginning and Advanced Firefighter

Future firefighters learn to work as a team fighting and putting out fires in basic and advanced firefighting courses. Students study how fires move and burn, as well as the physiological effects of burns and breathing smoke. Practical experience using firefighting equipment and practicing safety around fires is an important part of the courses. In advanced fire protection classes, students study real-life rescue procedures and building construction, so they know how to enter a burning building and bring occupants to safety.

Industrial Fire

Through this introductory fire protection course, students learn how to plan, manage and train for fire emergencies in businesses or factories. Discussion covers types of fires that commonly occur in industrial situations, fire safety techniques and risks that could occur with industrial fires. Furthermore, the course familiarizes students with fire protection by studying the pros, cons and implementation of different building and fire protection systems.

Fire Prevention and Inspection

Intermediate fire protection courses, such as fire prevention and inspection, introduce students to fire safety requirements and prevention methods. Some of these courses include an overview of fire codes that must be met for a building to be considered safe and how inspectors assess a building's compliance with those codes. The course also covers fire escape plans, including steps in how to create, practice, assess and initiate escape plans in homes, workplaces and schools.

Fire Systems

Fire protection systems is an intermediate master's-level course that provides information about different fire protection systems, including suppression and detection systems. Students learn about the different types of fires and the different materials needed to extinguish them. Fire extinguishing systems including sprinklers, foam systems and dry chemical systems are covered. Ways to install and test the systems are included; students practice installing fire suppression systems.

Building Construction for Fire Services

This fire protection course addresses topics relating to building collapse and failure because of fires. Students study issues related to building codes, including the different types of building structures and materials. They learn how fire spreads, how to enter and exit different buildings safely and how structures impacted by fire collapse. Sometimes, this course also touches on different building codes and making sure they're met.

Training Programs

Certificate, associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs in engineering, firefighting and public safety provide training in fire protection. Often, professors in these programs have personal experience in fire safety and can use their experiences to offer illustrations and advanced instruction, as well as insight into changes in fire protection systems. Training programs prepare students to practice safe techniques while putting out fires, designing buildings and checking code compliance. After completing these training programs, students can obtain licensure or certification in firefighting, engineering or public safety. Often, these programs include an internship in the field, gaining hands-on experience.
