Essential Information

Students aspiring to become engineers can find bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs at several 4-year institutions in Florida. Some engineering disciplines available include chemical, electrical, aerospace, mechanical, civil and computer engineering. Bachelor's degree programs usually feature significant science and math classes along with courses in the chosen engineering discipline, and labs are often incorporated for experiments and projects. Graduate programs may be geared toward teaching or engineering research and often allow students to focus on a specialization in their selected field. Some schools also offer combined bachelor's and master's degree programs that take less time to complete than two separate engineering programs.

University of Florida

The University of Florida, located in Gainesville, offers engineering programs through its College of Engineering. The College of Engineering conducts research in thermal sciences, control systems, fluid dynamics and design. Students can choose from a variety of programs that include bachelor's degrees in chemical, electrical, aerospace and mechanical engineering, as well as a combined bachelor's and master's program in computer engineering.

Chemical engineering students learn about thermodynamics, fluid operations, energy transfer and the structure of matter, while electrical engineering students learn about microprocessors, linear controls, digital circuits, communications and other electronic applications. The aerospace engineering program, which includes a lot of mechanical engineering coursework, prepares students for careers in the design, manufacturing or operation of aircraft and spacecraft. Students can also pursue a dual bachelor's degree program in aerospace and mechanical engineering or a combined bachelor's and master's degree in computer engineering, which allows students to participate in teaching or research.

University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida, located in Orlando, offers undergraduate and graduate engineering programs through its College of Engineering and Computer Science. The college is also home to the Florida Power Electronics Center, which researches cost effective ways to generate and store electricity.

Some sample undergraduate majors include computer engineering, civil engineering and engineering technology. The computer engineering program includes courses in digital circuits, programming, electronics, calculus and engineering statistics. The civil engineering program addresses structural and transportation issues and covers water resources, mass transit, soil dynamics and steel behavior among its course topics. The engineering technology program features a space systems technology concentration, and it is for students looking to enter manufacturing or technical careers in the space industry.

Those seeking a doctorate can study electrical or mechanical engineering. Electrical engineering students can specialize their study in signal processing, communications, robotics and other areas. Mechanical engineering students conduct research in mechanical systems, aerospace technology or thermofluids.
