Florida Radiology Schools with Overviews of Courses

Several schools in Florida offer degree programs in radiology. Miami Dade College in Miami, FL, gives students an associate's degree option in radiography. Valencia College offers students two degree programs and two advanced technical certificates.

Miami Dade College's Radiology Program

The largest institution of higher education in the country, Miami Dade College comprises eight campuses and enrolls about 164,000 students annually. The college opened as Dade County Junior College in 1960. The School of Health Sciences, located in the Medical Center Campus in Miami, FL, houses the college's associate's degree program in radiography, which is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

Associate in Applied Science in Radiography

Within this 2-year program, students engage in radiography coursework and clinical education at college-affiliated clinical facilities. Students can take courses in anatomy and physiology, physics of radiology, body positioning, biology of radiation and imaging modalities. Program graduates can seek positions as radiographers in educational settings, hospitals, physicians' offices, mobile x-ray agencies and outpatient diagnostic imaging centers.

Valencia College's Radiology Programs

Serving Osceola and Orange Counties, Valencia College comprises several locations in and around Orlando, FL. The college was founded as Valencia Junior College in 1967, before becoming Valencia College in 2011. The college's health sciences career programs include radiography programs exclusively at the undergraduate level, as well as two advanced technical certificates.

Computed Tomography (CT) Advanced Technical Certificate

Through the use of x-rays and computers, a CT technologist acquires specialized images of the body for use in disease diagnosis. Program graduates can seek employment primarily in diagnostic imaging centers and hospitals. Students who wish to enroll in this program must be American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB)-certified in radiation therapy, radiography or nuclear medicine technology. In accordance with the curriculum recommended by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) for ARRT certification examination preparation, students are required to participate in sectional anatomy and fundamentals of CT courses, as well as a CT clinical experiences.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Advanced Technical Certificate

Using radio waves and special computerized equipment, an MRI technologist must be knowledgeable in anatomy, magnetic fields, atomic structure and electromagnets. Students who wish to enroll in this certificate program must be ARRT, NMTCB or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)-certified in sonography, nuclear medicine technology, radiography or radiation therapy. In accordance with the curriculum recommended by the ASRT for ARRT certification examination preparation, students are required to participate in sectional anatomy and progressive MRI courses, as well as an MRI clinical experiences.

Associate in Science in Radiography

Accredited by JRCERT, program graduates can sit for the national certification examination from the ARRT. Students enrolled in this program take courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, radiography principles, psychology, pathology and radiation protection. Program graduates can seek employment as radiographers or radiologic technologists in hospitals, public health organizations, imaging centers and urgent care clinics.

Bachelor of Science in Radiological Imaging Sciences

Accredited by JRCERT, Valencia College's radiological imaging sciences bachelor's degree program was designed to build upon the concepts taught within the radiography associate's degree program. With the exception of the required practicum, all courses offered in this program are available online. Students who wish to enroll in this program must have earned an associate's degree for admission and must be able to complete four years of study.
