Florida Welding Certification and Diploma Options
Florida is home to roughly 170 public and private not-for-profit educational institutions. Out of that number, about 31 schools have welding diploma and certification options.
Brevard Community College
A welding technology program can be enrolled in at Brevard Community College in Cocoa. The daytime courses for this program are intended for full-time students while the evening option is for part-time students. The curriculum covers the four major welding areas including gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc and oxy-acetylene. Students also get experience with welding positions like overhead, horizontal, flat and vertical.
College of Central Florida
Ocala is where the College of Central Florida is located and students there can pursue a vocational certificate in applied welding technologies. The classes in this program are 60 to 120 clock hours. The entire length of the program is 1,170 clock hours. The coursework goes over pipe welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, oxy-acetylene welding and shielded metal arc welding. There are several lab courses in this program that students can use as opportunities to develop their welding skills.
Daytona State College
Students residing in Daytona Beach can attend a welding technology program at Daytona State College. Throughout the program's 725 contact hours, students spend time on welding theory and laboratory courses. As part of the program requirements, students have to purchase welding safety equipment. Upon graduating, students are expected to be able to start and plan welding projects as well as troubleshoot any issues that arise while welding.
Florida Gateway College
An occupational certificated can be earned in applied welding technology in Lake City at Florida Gateway College. To progress through the program, students must have a D grade or higher in their courses while still having a GPA of 2.0 or higher. The 1,170 clock hours of the program is spread out across 5 welding courses. In total, students earn 39 occupational credits by completing this program that covers FCAW, GTAW, SMAW, GMAW, thermal cutting and pipe welding.
Florida State College at Jacksonville
Jacksonville is the city where Florida State College at Jacksonville resides and the school offers a workforce certificate for applied welding technologies majors. By finishing this program's 1,170 contact hours, students receive 38.5 workforce credits. After meeting the basic language, reading and mathematic skills, students can start being educated on basic arc welding, advanced welding, flux core welding, shielded metal arc pipe welding and gas tungsten arc ferrous metal welding.
Indian River State College
An applied welding technology program is pursuable in Fort Pierce at Indian River State College. Creating indentions, filling holes and bonding pieces together are just a few of the things students learn how to do to metal products in this program's curriculum. In addition to these welding courses, students can learn about blueprint interpretation, safety procedures, quality standards and material usage. This 1,200 clock hour program has 8 classes that are each 150 clock hours.
Mid Florida Tech
Found in Orlando, Mid Florida Tech has an applied welding technologies program. Gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, pipe welding, gas tungsten arc welding and shielded metal arc welding are the core techniques covered in this school's welding program. In total, students need 1,170 contact hours to graduate from this school's welding programs. Students can apply their coursework from this program towards an associate's degree program.
Palm Beach State College
Palm Beach State College at Lake Worth provides students with an educational program that results in a welding technology certificate. In addition to the Lake Worth campus, students can take the welding program at the Belle Glade campus. Although a GED or a high school diploma is not required to enter into this program, students must take an adult basic education test. The 24 credits acquired in this program totals to 1,170 contact hours in the 5 core welding areas.
Pasco-Hernando Community College
A technical certificate in applied welding technologies is available at Pasco-Hernando Community College in New Port Richey. By attending this program on a full-time basis, students can complete it in roughly 18 months. Lectures are held in a classroom setting, but students get their hands-on experience in the welding workshop. Brazing, soldering and welding are all covered in this school's program and students can expect to work with plastics, steel, aluminum and titanium.
Santa Fe College
Students at Santa Fe College in Gainesville can find an applied welding technology program. The 1,170 contact hours in this program take about a year and a half to finish. The program focuses on TIG welding, MIG welding, shielded metal arc welding and flux cored welding. Power tool operation and blueprint reading are also topics that are studied in this school's welding program. A certification test from the American Welding Society must be passed prior to graduation for welding students in this program.
